Hi,

I know VR is big with gaming and movies but does anyone else use it for every day PC use?

I'm wondering if you can use it successfully with desktops, photoshop, browsing etc purely to decrease the space used with screens.

thanks

VR has potential to fully replace monitors, for everything. But or me, the resolution isn’t there, yet.

I don't think i could sit with my vr headset on consistently. It's nice as a thing to pick up and game but i also enjoy games outside of vr due to not having to be immersed from everything outside

I think when VR sets are the size of sunglasses and the picture as sharp as a monitor then it will be the end of monitors. But it's a long way off.

There are other issues too. Like you can't see the keyboard or beer while using a VR headset.

Pretty much this. I think what we'll end up with one day in the not too distant future is some kind of augmented reality glasses/headwear platform which will eventually remove the need for devices like phones/laptops with their own displays. That way you'll have the option to see both the real world with an AR HUD style display or a full VR view.

We're still a few years (decades maybe) away from anything like that replacing phones, monitors and televisions yet though. The technology (resolution/optics/weight/size, power efficiency) just isn't there yet. I thin that's part of the reason Microsoft has admitted defeat in the smartphone market as it knows AR could be the tech that replaces both it and tablets/laptops. Hence why Microsoft keeps touting it's "mixed Reality" technology rather than calling it VR. I suspect they have much bigger plans for it in future.

Some of the virtual interfaces being used in VR games are essentially prototypes for future AR/VR productivity UI's.

Look at the way Lone Echo has virtual tablet screens that you can pull out of tabs from your wrist, with fully touch capable interfaces. You can place them anywhere in 3D space, and even throw them away to remove them. What's more is they are astoundingly intuitive to use.

Thats the problem. I also use a vape it keeps getting lost.

My problem with VR is I get strained eyes fairly quickly but perhaps I need glasses. Can you wear a VR headset with glasses?

Depends on the Headset. The only headset I've used that works well with glasses is the Oculus Go. Many people use prescription lens inserts with their VR headsets instead.

I wear glasses with My Rift and, apart from been having to be a little bit more careful taking the headset on and off, I have had no issues. The Vive is even easier to wear with glasses.

For most of the headsets there are special frames you can get that are thinner than normal frames or custom inserts that you can put into the headset. The Frames are good if there are a few people using the headset, if it's mainly just you, then the inserts are a great option.

Many years away from the tech being good enough, but I think it'll happen.

I'm sat here with 3 screens, with different viewports, level editors, debuggers, mattermost etc running. Could easily utilise 6 monitors. That's not even mentioned the console dev kits that I need to switch inputs to use.

Give me a headset that provides :
  • Equivalent resolution of a 1080p monitor at 30-40cm.
  • Unlimited virtual 1080/4k displays that I can position wherever I like
  • Perfect eye-tracking
  • Perfect hand + finger tracking
  • A virtual visualisation of the real physical keyboard in front of me and finger tracking in sync so I can type without getting out of the headset (no substitute for a keyboard)
  • Ditto for other peripherals like controllers
  • The ability to look 'through' the headset....a virtual tool that makes the panel transparent in a specific portion of the screen
Probably 10 years off still sadly.

indeed, i believe we are some time off VR replacing screens for actual work and every day use, however VR is already far more than just gaming.

the military use VR i believe
doctors are using vr for training
and there are already a mass of "edutainment" apps available for VR devices.

Way more than 10 years for sure! To have tech that small, that powerful, and with enough power to make it all work is far beyond what we can do now, but am looking forward to the day is comes out ;)
