I was about to purchase an Oculus Rift at £399, but I paused to check the alternatives.

Now I'm stuck in a minefield of stuff.

The HTC Vive has much better resolution, but much more expensive. Why is the Gear VR so cheap?

My primary use-case is flight sims, racing sims and the odd tomb raider style adventure game.

How to the alternatives fair for support etc.?

Look in Virtual Reality discussion section, a lot of this has already been covered in there...to summarise Rift is currently as good as it gets for reasonable money although you'll need a third sensor to match Vive tracking in room scale, HTC Vive Pro is not considered enough of an upgrade to justify the extra cost.

Three the other device worth considering IMO is Playstation VR which is currently on sale for £250 with the move controllers though obviously you'll need a PS4 to use it.

Actually to be fair of you want it for flight and race sims you might be better with an Oculus. Dirt rally is good on Playstation VR and WipeOut omega is IMO the best VR racing game on any platform. Depends whether you view futuristic racing as a sim though!

In terms of flight UltraWings is good but not really a sim game as such. More pilot wings in VR.

Didn't realise we had that section. Noted.

Also you have told me more or less what reading around agrees on, that the Oculus is hard to beat.
