VR on 2600k at 4.5Ghz and 1080ti OC

Hi All,

Ive been looking at VR since the OR and VIVE were released and I am about ready to drop the money on one.

The only thing that concerns me is the resolution and performance. I have a 2600K CPU at 4.5Ghz and a 1080ti and i expect to be able to play the games such as Elite or PC2 maxed out and get no frame loss at all. Is this a reality right now or am i still expecting too much?
I normally play in 2D at 4K so i love my fidelity and im a bit of a res snob but i obviously understand that i need to be realistic about my expectations.

I also have the issue of which to choose. I want the headset for static gaming as well as being able to use it in a play area that is about 3-4 meters by 5-6 meters and id like to get the family and friends involved when they come round as a bit of fun.

I what both the static gaming and area gaming to be of the best quality and i need to know which headset is going to be able to provide that. For example, ive read that the OR is better for static gaming for DCS and PC2 but the VIVE is better supported for gaming in an area while stood up.

Some input from experienced users would be gratefully received here as dropping 500 notes on something needs to be done right first time to better suit my usage case.

So i guess the first question is "do i have enough power?" and the second is "which one to get for my usage case?".

Thanks all, this has been really informative . It looks like the rift gets the thumbs up over the vive every time.

Can you still play that vr 3d drawing game with the rift as that looks awesome lol.

I always thoght the vice was just a better vr experience but you guys are really starting to change my mind.

It looks like I need to do some more research now and check out the setup of the rift. I am happy to spend more getting extra light houses and such if needed.

I have a msi z68 g3 board that has 2 USB 3 on the back and 2 USB 3 on the back. I also have 4 USB 3 on the front of my monitor.

I'll have to look at stands and things for the rift as well....

Anything else you can think of?

My friend has the vive and I had a go on it for about 30-45 mins and I'll be honest I was completely underwhelmed by the res ad I had to squint massively to read the text but I've since figured that his settings might have been a bit low and he certainly didn't have the power for supersampling on 1 980.

I just really don't want to drop the money and then struggle with performance mainly.

God why does this have to be be such a hard decision.... Both have pros and cons... I might start off with a smaller play area with 2 sensors and go from there....

The mobo should be all good in regards to avaliable USB connections
 
If you are disappointed with the Vive res, then you are probably going to be disappointed with the Rift too. Sorry to say. Super sampling does improve things but it's not a night and day difference. What games did you try out on the Vive if you don't mind me asking?
I tried elite d... Looking at stuff in the distance was terrible and I could bearly read the hud text
 
I know someone has already suggested a Samsung oddessey and you can only import them currently, but why not a Windows Mixed Reality headset?

I bought my Dell WMR headset 3 weeks ago and I'm glad I picked it over the rift, like you I was not happy about the res with the OR. Plus you don't have to pay £400 or £500, I got mine for £279 and it's great for IL-2 Sturmovik, Startrek bridge crew and Batman VR.

It's really easy to setup and you don't need extra usb ports, it works at 1440 res, has a better FOV and works and Steam, windows store and OR store with revive software.

Just measure your pupillary distance first, if you decide to get one.

Also look at some youtube videos, this is a good one

Here is my MOBO guys. I cant find a lot on the web about its compatibility for the OR but if she is...... i may well pull the trigger today for it to be delivered tomorrow.

How much lead is there to play with? I have 2 USB 3.0 on the back of my MOBO and 2 on the front. Will i be able to reach 2 to the back and 3 to the front? I do also have a USB 3.0 card that plugs right into the MOBO header which i can run out the back but this would disable the 2 USB 3.0s at the front of my case so id rather not...
 
Ok and next question. My computer is situated in the kitchen and to my right as i look at it there are some sliding double doors that go out into the garden. These are south facing so can be quite bright when the sun is shining. I have blinds on them but they are only the long slated thin things that you would see in offices.

I also have Porcelain tiles on the floor which are highly reflective..... Are these environmental additions going to affect the way the OR tracks?

Im just trying to cover all bases here.... i hate returning stuff...

From what i read this is a big no no and i am not putting a rug down every time i want to use the thing.... I want to pick up and play, not prepare an entire room and then play :(.

I guess things like the cooker front which is glass will also get in the way of tracking.... Im tempted to just say screw it and get it to see and then return if it doesnt work..

Not with the Vive. It's a plug and play setup and only 1 USB 2 port and 1 HDMI needed.

The 2 Vive sensors are pointing down to where you play.
And when the HTC Wireless dongle comes out, you can have up to 3 players all using 1 computer.

The Vive has a IPD knob where as the oculus doesn't.

So you will need a USB3.0 port for each sensor, and then an additional USB2.0 port and HDMI port for the headset.

I have the sensors permanently plugged in at the back of the PC, then i have a short HDMI extension cable going to the front of the pc to plug in the headset, i also use a front USB2.0 port for the headset.

Are you using the rear USB3.0 ports? if so could you use the front USB3.0 ports for the sensors?

With regards to your environment, no one will be able to tell you if it will work or not, you will just have to try it.
I think what i will do is stick with just the 2 location sensors for now and utilise the 2 USB 3.0 connections at the back of the PC for that and then plug the rest of the headset into a USB 2.0 and the HDMI on my GPU.

Yes my play area will be smaller but it will give me a good testing area to start off with. I can then sort out the 3rd sensor later down the line and just plug that with an extension cable into the front of the PC.
 
OK so I've run the checker and I get green ticks all the way although they say my cpu is above minimum recommend. They do say it's 3.4ghz but mine is at 4.5.

The USB ports passed fine as well
 
That Inateck card is hit and miss. Worth a try for the price, but mine proved to be a pain in the bum with both installing drivers and actually using it, so I ordered the Startech.

It's a non-starter if he's gonna be using 3-4 sensors IMO.
I'm gonna start with just the 2 and then build from there. I don't think I'll need an expansion card guys
 
OK so I've had a rethink.... And a re-measure. It looks like I actually will have a play area of 250cm by 250cm.... So 2 sensors might be enough.

Now I believe the only thing I have left to worry about really is those dam porcelain tiles and how they might kill the accuracy.... I'm not into a having a big mat down each time I wanna play but if I have too.... I'm sure I could find some thing I could roll out
 
I imported a Samsung odyssey last week and running it on a 980ti or Titan Xp. I did get it for seated games (sim racing) as it is the easiest to set up, has the same res/panels as the Vive Pro, but the main reason I got it was for the flexibility, I just carry it downstairs to the kitchen where I have a 980ti SFF PC and it plays all the room scale stuff really well, no real setup, no sensors etc, yet tracking etc has been flawless. Just one hdmi, one USB and its plug and play.

Upstairs on the titan Xp sim racing I can max everything out at 90fps no issues on the titan Xp and not had to overclock it (although 4770k is at 4.3ghz). Downstairs on the 980ti, all the room scale stuff so far is flawless at 90fps.

IFA is just in a week or two and Samsung Odyssey+ is being announced, which may be available in Europe, and is slightly improved, so may end getting one as well, then I can keep the two setups permanent (the kids love it).

Initially Windows MR was a bit pants, but now it just seems to work, Steam Vr support is excellent, and navigating between Windows Mr home and Steam is a doddle, no need to remove the headset for anything, as either Steam desktop or Windows MR desktop apps work really well when you need that.

I am impressed with tracking,I expected issues, but so far so good, I can only echo recent reviews saying it just works, and I've no more glitches than I've had with the Or which is next to none.

As someone mentioned above, you can the Dell visor headset /controllers for £287 which is great if you just want to dabble, obviously the tiny bit more res and oled panels in the SO did make me I port one, but I already knew I wanted Vr having spent two weeks with a loaned OR.
