VR then GPU then Monitor - but which gaming monitor?

I appreciate that this is a bit of a 'crystal ball' thread. But, over the next 12 months or so I'm going to be dropping a bit of cash into upgrading.

This is mainly driven by VR as I've pre-ordered the HTC Vive. I've seen the 'VR vs. gaming screen thread' but that doesn't really apply to me as I've decided to invest in the VR experiment.

I'll then get a new GPU when the new ones are available in about 3-6 months.

After that, I think it will be a new Monitor setup. I say 'setup' as I've got a very cobbled together set of monitors which I use with AMD Eyefinity (see my signature). But this is intermittently fiddly to get it working.

I'm interested in Super-Wide monitors especially the curved ones. It will be used for gaming - Guild Wars 2, Elite Dangerous, Half Life 2, Far Cry 3 & 4, driving games etc.

If I was to spend about £600:

  • Which monitor would you recommend now?
  • Is super-wide supported by many games?
  • Is it worth investing in super-wide or is it better to stick with multi-monitor?
  • Is super-wide as fiddly to set up and as sensitive to driver changes as Eyefinity (or the Nvidia equivalent)?
  • What's the likely next steps for gaming monitors over the next 12 months...

Lots of questions I know...

As your waiting a while anyway's the X34 and PG348Q could hopefully come down in price once your ready to buy. Right now both are probably the best ultrawide panels combining 100hz with G-sync if you go Nvidia of course.

Most recent titles I have played, support the resolution. Some games have quirks such as Fallout 4/ 3 etc., but as they are pretty big titles, work around's are usually found fairly quickly. Other's such as witcher 3 have cut scenes in 2560 x 1440 while the gameplay is in 3440 x 1440. Either way I think most newer titles will have some form of support and for me personally doing some tweaking to get games to play nice with the resolution is well worth the end result.

Single superwide has 0 issues in terms of setting up. Plug and play almost and windows scales pretty nicely.

Hard to say where it will go in the next 12 months, but possibly higher refresh rate panels possibly coming out. Currently we are limited by bandwidth of Disaplyport 1.2, but Polaris and Pascal from what I have seen should be coming with Displayport 1.3 that can open up some new possibilities. There are already some rumours: http://www.techpowerup.com/219588/samsung-readies-144-hz-3440-x-1440-ultra-wide-monitors.html but could just be fluff.
