i only have 1GB of VRAM but i do have 8GB of System RAM (which i can easily upgrade) so was wondering, is it possible to use some of the system ram as vram?

VRAMwhi and System RAM

Some very low end cards/on-board graphics chips do this, and higher end cards don't for a reason: System RAM is incredibly slow compared to on-board VRAM. If you think about it, every time the graphics card would want to get something off the main memory it has to request that data from the CPU which itself has comparatively limited bandwidth to the main memory as compared to the GPU and its VRAM, then that data has to be sent over the PCI-E bus which is a huge bottleneck in itself.
