VRR question, Philips 55OLED706

Simple question guys...

Should I leave vsync on if I'm using VRR? TV comes up as gysnc compatible in nvidia cp, and is set to 60hz in windows and nvidia control panel (more on why I can't set to 120hz below).

And how should I test? Just run a game like cyberpunk max settings so fps drops below 60 fps and see how it feels? Should still feel smooth right? Never had it before.

I THINK gsync compatible means VRR works from 48fps to 120fps but I'm not sure how to check that.

P. S anyone thinking of buying this set or the 806 etc, don't!!! Until they've sorted the firmware.
I'm Thinking of sending this TV back as despite jaw dropping pq, unfortunately having a myriad of issues with it...
main ones being:
1) it doesn't seem a good set for a monitor for HTPC as the "monitor" pq setting is bugged to hell (more below)
2) desktop often ain't the right size (eg mouse pointer goes about 2mm off the top and right of viewable area)
3) VRR does not work in 120hz on this set, in any mode.
4) massive issues with presets and limited options:
A) every single mode has some sort of motion interpolation which cannot be turned off (greyed out), but game feels OK, 60hz
B) only pq setting that works OK is game, and basically every preset has things greyed out, so can't make one for eg night use, one for movie, etc.

TV won't work at all in 120hz mode: text is blurry, works in" monitor mode but: no VRR in monitor mode, desktop viewable area is wwaaaaayy off, AND have 4cm tearing bars down middle and right of screen and an extra windows task bar block of colour is added at the bottom??

Terrible as a HTPC this one guys. A shame, Netflix looks incredible, plus ambilight is gonna be hard to say goodbye too. Wish Philips would lose the patent tbh.

Unfortunately these are all known issues with this model. True 4k with 120hz only on PC monitor mode but without VRR and like you said lots of bugs.

Personally I found VRR absolutely useless and have it permanently turned off as it also introduces flickering.

Why would you want ambilight with an OLED which has infinite contrast? Save yourself tons of headache and just get an LG.

Ahhhh the flickering is caused by VRR? Ahhhh actually no the flickering I get is on Netflix and 4k blu ray... Weird.
My screen does seem to be changing brightness all the time though, no idea what's causing that.

Ambilight is awesome, not sure if you're thinking about something else; nothing to do with contrast??
I don't really want an LG tbh, my dream TV had ambilight and dream living room has Philips hue.

I'll just wait until Philips make a TV that works, have a chip that can do 120hz 4k VRR or amend the current one (Panasonic have managed it on the same chip apparently)

You could just buy a decent TV and hue gradient strip for the same effect (you will also need the (horribly overpriced) Hue hdmi sync box if you want ambilight from all sources, but the hue sync app will work direct from PC with no extra hardware)

Ambilight was brought in as fancy bias lighting to increase perceived contrast of LED TVs hence my comment about OLED infinite contrast.

I personally found Ambilight very annoying during movie watching when I visited a friend that has it. Good for gaming or youtube music videos I guess. There are third party solutions as Haggisman mentioned if you must have it.

Yup, I have the gradient strip on my TV and playbars on my monitor - it adds to the immersion when gaming (e.g. it's great when the whole room turns deep blue when playing Subnautica, bright blue-white in snowy scenes, or a nice red/orange glow when there's lots of fire on screen), but haven't really felt the need to get the syncbox for general TV/movies
