Hey all,

Are any of you using VSCO film packs and if so which one do you recommend. I have been looking on their website today and there are packs 1-4, struggling to decide which one or ones to choose.

Be great to seem some samples of your work using them also :)

Cheers

I've not used them but they do seem to be very popular if it was my money it would be the classic film pack 02 that got my money as to me they are the most interesting films. I've never shot slide for real, the instant films would be fun once in a while but not worth the investment and the modern films don't hold the memories of the classics.

Hnnng, why tempt me with these things?! As they're on sale I feel compelled to buy one and I'm now in the same situation as the OP! :D

They are presets for LR and PS to give the look of a certain type of film negative. It's nothing more than playing with sliders to recreate a certain look. They appeal to some and some to be fair do have a nice quality to them.

You can get similar presets cheaper or free (still legit, only smaller numbers as they are user made) with a quick Google.

Personally i like the Nik collection as i find it a more powerful set of tools and but out of the box there aren't that many presets available compared with all the VSCO film packs. With a discount code Nik can be had for less than £80.

I'd knock Film Pack 2 off your list. Why anyone would want to go to the trouble of trying to emulate Superia is beyond me.

The one with the Polariod and FP profiles looked the most interesting.

Thanks, I've been using LR since its inception and I never realised that you could buy presets. Now I'm left with the question why the hell would you?

Surely lightroom is all about creating your own look and not some other persons.

Having said that maybe I'm just an old tight git that doesn't like parting with cash! :D

Yeah you can buy all sorts of presets. Tbf some have their uses so while its not creating your own look their are some nice looking ones. They are easy to use and you don't have to spend ages to recreate a certain look. And that's the thing the VSCO stuff is meant to accurately recreate a certain type / grade of film and in a certain camera. Others are just a general look to taste.

Personally i think the VSCO stuff is very overpriced for what it is, but if you want a certain look and can't make it then they are not that expensive.

Some nice examples of stuff here from the wedding angle : http://jonaspeterson.com/for-photographers/vsco-film-edit-images/

Google around tho and you'll find lots of free alternatives. As with all presets, they are nothing cute or anything, just sliders and tweaks, no underlying software changes. Just someone else has spent the time to set them up.

This is why i like the Nik Collection, you're buying actual tools rather than preset as such. The value of the Nik Collection since Google got their hands on them have gone through the roof. What they used to charge for one piece of software you now get the whole collection for that price. Nik has a vintage camera module within it and fully tweakable. And unlike VSCO you can try Nik for 15 days for free :)

The best thing with filters is, if you have a selection of them you can go through them and it demonstrates what you can do with that image. Most people just use presets as a starting point though :)

Yeah I would agree with that, and the way I use filters, say for example Nik collection, is as a starting point, my finished pictures look nothing like the basic preset, I feel it helps you get into the ball park pretty quickly and then you add your own finish to them.

Really fancy trying these out. My wedding stuff doesn't use any fancy filters, I have my own presets which mainly consist of vibrance and clarity to just make the images pop.

However I'd like to play with some presets for my personal stuff. I'm thinking of getting pack one.

90% of the time I use only one preset from VSCO Film 03 Professional Canon version (despite using Nikon and Panasonic cameras).

These are not "filters" like you have in Photoshop. They are Presets. The two terms are very different things in the photo editing sense!

I have all the packs and have combined several of them into my own custom presets to get the look to my images I've been trying to get manually for a very long time.

Thing is, I never settle for the presets, I tend to at least tweak them, every photo is different even if you use the same preset on all of them. It doesn't just magically work.

If you buy 1 pack you automatically get 25% off your next purchase in your account anyway.

Yeah but I'm not paying full wack for the first pack (I assume it was 25% off the sale price of the second pack as well?). It was a whim purchase that has lost its shine now it's not on sale :D
