vSphere and UPS

Hey,

I had a rather nice 30 min power cut at work yesterday which has prompted me to check and sort out my UPS systems.

We run vSphere with two hosts, a SAN and 5 x APC SmartUPS 1500 (don't ask they were already here). None of them have management cards.

I would assume the best way to utilize auto shutdown etc is to buy a couple of management cards and the ESX software from APC? Is this the best way or should I be looking at something else.

Cheers,

Jon

Don't the APCs have the 9pin serial ports as standard?

I've not used APC kit for a while but at our last company we ran the serial cable to an Win2K box which ran a monitoring app (freeware I think?). When it detected an outage and low battery condition it ran CLI commands remotely on the mission critical boxes to shut them down. I seem to remember the only difficult thing to configure for RCLI was our Netware boxes.

Just make sure the server BIOSes are set to turn on automatically on resumption of power.

Sorry that's a bit vague, it was ages ago....

They don't have serial connections unfortunately, just USB.

I think I'm going to purchase a couple of management cards and the
PowerChute Network Shutdown for VMWare.

Thanks. :)
