Hi,

I've got an X8DTL-iF with two E5630's. Its just come in the post and I did the immediate thing of getting vSphere 6 installed to match my other systems, however it appears that no matter what I set in the BIOS, as soon as ESXi gets any load through it (i.e. run a VM and do anything with it) the fans spin up to full speed and don't slow down for ages.

Has anyone got a similar board? I'm going to try vSphere 5.5 and see if that helps, but I wonder if there are no drives in 6.0 for the hardware?

any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Chris

Ok, so it appears that the fan noise is constant no matter how little load on the system is applied. Do these SM server boards require all fan headers to be plugged in order for the main cpu fans not to go in to overdrive? At the moment, they're both running at 7500 RPM as soon as an activity happens on the server and unlike my Dell R410 which regulates the fans down as soon as vSphere has loaded, this SM board doesn't appear to.

Do I need to purchase some more PWM fans to plug in to the other fan ports in order to make it go quiet? The current fans appear to be intel 2u ones and at when at POST run very quiet.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Chris

I had the same problem with my server but i have a older model power edge 1950 G2 it was fine when i bought it and then few months after it started the put the fans on full speed only did it once tho.
