My '97 VTR battery keeps discharging!

I've just had the meter on it and the voltage on the battery (ignition off is around 12.4V (normal).

I jusmp start it (not enough oomph in the battery to get it going) and the voltage rises to 14.0V (as I'd expect).

When I rev the engine, this then drops to 13.4-13.6 V. Even more of a drop when I load up the system with lights on (lower than 12.4V).

Does this sound like the regulator/rectifier is duff of do you think the alternator is on it's way out?

Any advice welcomed before I start spending my hard earned cash!

The battery is less than a year old. If I take it off and charge it up, it's starts first time. I can get a few starts with it before it dies on me again.

The optimate says it's good as well.

I've just put in a spare battery that was fully charged. It did the same thing with the voltage.

I've also measured the voltage coming directly out of the alternator. At high revs it's kicking out 40+ volts to earth. Didn't check between the windings though.

To me, it looks as though the r/r is on it's way out. I'd rather make sure as it's £75 for a new one!

I had heard of Honda r/r's failing and in a big way. There is no evidence of this one burning or blistering on the unit but what you say makes sense. The alternator is kicking out a good voltage without the r/r connected so I can't really see it as being that at fault.

I've just spoken to a mate and he's got the same bike but a newer version. He said he'll let me try his r/r in mine as they are fairly easy to swap over.

Thanks for your input guys!
