Hi, woke up to my pc in sleep mode tried to wake it up and nothing? After some testing I have found out my beloved 7970 is dead! Around 2 months ago I fitted the accelero xtreme to the card and it has been working perfectly. The only problem I had was with the card sagging under the weight of the cooler. Just wondering weather the cooler install has killed my card or it's just bad luck due to some other problem. Anyone else had a problem with there 7970 after installation of this cooler?

yeah i definitely think the 7970 vtx's are not the best card around that's for sure. when i removed the heat-sink i was very surprised to only find a small heat sink on the vrms at the back of the card, even the stock cooler heat sink covers a few of the chips to the front of the card.
you think a lot of theses have been RMA. maybe that's why overclockers stopped selling them.

I don't know what I was thinking buying one used as their RMA process is bad enough when you've bought the card new. It just teaches you to stick with trusted brands in the future.

RMA process is bad enough? so i guess it takes a while..

When I had a look it seemed hit and miss with some people it only took a few weeks with others it took months and some didn't even receive a card back or were told there was nothing wrong with it.

Heard too many bad reports about VTX, so along with XFX i tend to avoid their gpu's these days.

Doesn't removing the cooler invalidate your warranty? yeah you probably right.
wonder what the chances of RMA the card are, if it was dead becoz of something i did maybe i wouldn't try but i don't believe it was. just have to pray they don't remove stock cooler :(

So glad I went with the Gigabyte windforce 7970 instead of one of these. To be fair though I put in an offer of £250 for one on the well known auction site and he said he would have taken £260 which is a good price.

Reading this thread has me a little worried about my VTX 7970 now. Core temp and VRM temps seem fine mind. What would you guys recommend? Is it the card or the cooler thats not that great cos i was thinking of getting an Accelero Xtreme cooler

IIRC all modern Arctic coolers require you to use a heat transferring epoxy to glu e the heatsinks on.

Once you do this it's game over for warranty. My advice is leave your card alone and if it packs up so be it, return it for RMA.

Then in future avoid a cheap card plus a good cooler as it costs you the same in the long run as just buying a decent card from the get go.
