VTX3D 7850 - Graphics card problems - please help :(

Hey guys!

Recently my graphics card (6 months old) started to make a god awful noise intermittently when I booted up my pc. The noise would come from the fan on the card, as it tried to spin. It was so bad it would vibrate my pc. The only way to get the card to stop making the noise was to give the fan a little push and then it would work fine.

However, I recently got to the point where I wasn't happy with a 6 month old card failing like this, so I sent it back to overclockers and assumed they'd fix it, or replace it. I Borrowed a friends old GPU in the mean time.

So they returned the card yesterday saying they couldn't find a fault on it. I'm a little incredulous about this but I took it on good faith, and the first time I booted up all seemed to be well.

This morning however the card made the exact same noise, and now windows doesn't seem to be able to boot up "Desktop Windows Manager".

Now, I'm pretty broke at the moment, and I need my pc for my studies. I'm pretty certain I can't actually afford to RMA the card again, so I'm asking for peoples opinions. Can I fix this card without sending it back? Or should they (as I feel) have actually tested it correctly and found the fault?

I just want a working card :(

seemslike its making the noise from when its cold? at startup? once warm its fine

you could buy a tiny bottle of wd40 and take out the graphic card and spray a tiny amount on the fan bearing or the gap inbetween the fan at the centre where it spins, take care not to use a large amount or get it on any other part of the gpu,it will lubricate the fan and bearing and should stop it making the noise

might do if they spot it,im guessing its the fan binding when its cold, once its warm and expands the noise goes away, you can use wd40 on electrical items, its non conductive but try and use the smallest amount where the fan spins, other than that id rma again and demand a replacement

I've got a new RMA number, but I'm so wary of sending it back, just to have them return it to me totally un touched.

I'll see how this goes. Thanks for the help.

Is the fan loose at all?

Can you try moving it a little (whilst out of your system)?

Just make sure that OCUK will be able to recreate the problem :)

PS - you do know that OcUK refund postage on RMAs when they find the fault? :)

That's the problem I think, the issue is intermittent, so i can only assume that when they had it, the card appeared to work fine.

I can't actually afford to send the card atm :( And Whose to say they will find the fault? :/

I haven't actually tried to replicate the problem myself, but when I get home later I will try and do so. The thing is, when the card works, it seems to work fine. When it doesn't it really doesn't.

I'd say I have the fan issue at least every other day, when i come to turn the pc on.

Just set a custom fan profile using afterburner that gives the card 100% fan between 10c and 20c, when the comp boots the fan should, for a second or so ramp the fan to max, then settle down to normal fan speeds.

Well, I have spent the morning trying to replicate the problem. Wacked the fan up to 100% and it was fine. Also when I booted it up this morning it didn't make the noise. I imagine this is what happened to the guys at OC.

It's kinda hard to claim the thing is broke when it seems to decide on and off when its going to work and not going to work.
