VW/Audi experts - MAF error code

A friend just e-mailed me this, regarding issues with his car :-

16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Signal too Low

Any ideas?
 
Needs a new MAF, you can try cleaning it with electrical cleaner but it's just delaying the inevitable.
 
Yep, that'd be a failing MAF.

The easiest way to check is to unplug it, the car will not want to idle but suddenly will drive with more power (really noticable if it's a turbo)

The ECU uses a fallback system using the MAP sensor and preset mapping to keep the car running.
 
The MAF sensor needs replaced. It's a very common problem.

If he runs it with the MAF disconnected the ESP will also fail so bare that in mind. Safer not fiddling about with it as you can be almost certain that it is screwed, might as well just swap it.
 
Paid £75 from VW for mine (Golf MK4 TDi). That is with the rebate they give you if you hand the old one back, within 7 days? Could be 14. :)
