Hi all,

I am looking for a VW Golf as a daily commuter to work. Average mileage for the year would be approximately 10,000 miles. Looking for a Petrol given the amount of mileage I do. Need to watch out for insurance premium price so this is why I am not looking at GTI etc, unless they are not much more to insure? Budget is up to 7k ideally.

I can get a VW Golf MK5 1.6 Match 5dr (2007) for around £5800 - £6500.

Alternatively, I can get a VW Golf MK6 1.4 S 5dr (2009) for around £7000.

However, I have noticed that the MK6 only has 80 BHP whereas, the MK5 has 115.

Should I go with the older car, or go with the slightly newer, but slower car?

Yeh the MK6 S spec is extremely basic. Plus the MK5 is 1.6 FSI hence the extra HP. Are you set on the Golf? Could either get a better spec on the Polo or change over to Seat Leon.

The mk6 golf is a notable improvement inside from the mk5 (in saying that, it's not like there's a massive difference, it's just....nicer) - however unless you can get at least the 120bhp 1.4 I wouldn't say it made enough difference to warrant chosing the mk6 from your two.

Have you looked at the octavia? Probably get a 1.4tsi for your money and tbh it's a better engine than either of those. In saying that, my friend has a 1.6 octavia, he doesn't particularly care about performance and really likes the car so I guess you should try the mk5

I am set on a Golf...I think they are very decent. Polo would be too small for me, Leon are nice but I hate the inside, think it looks really cheap. Although, the new Leons look great inside, just a bit too much for my current budget.

I have checked out the Octavia, am not a fan of it but I understand I would be getting more for my money. TSI are too expensive for my current budget but that would be my ideal choice.

Regardless of mileage, what are people's opinion of a 1.9 TDI Golf (2007)? If they have been serviced on time, would this model/engine be a better choice over a 1.6 FSI Petrol? I have seen many adverts where the Petrol Golf's are costing roughly the same as a Diesel - that's why I'm asking the question. Also, does anyone know the service intervals on Cambelts? I've been quoted different figures e.g. every 4 years etc but I have yet to find a consistent answer.

The 1.9TDi is a brilliant engine and will perhaps even be less likely to go wrong than the 1.6FSi. Just make sure the 1.9TDi you get is not the BXE engine code as for some resin cars with this engine code seem to suffer complete engine failure for no apparent reason but all the other versions of the 1.9TDi are pretty bulletproof providing they have been serviced well. They also don't have a DPF in the mk5.

Thanks for that. I thought the MK5 have the DPF

Have just read up on BXE, quite scary, will keep this in mind, thanks.
