I have a VW Golf V5 Mk4, and a couple of questions.

At my last main dealer service, they said the anti-roll bars and anti-roll bar bushes were worn out and needed changing (lots of squeaking going over speed bumps).

Is it likely the anti-roll bars really need replacing, I know on my old Impreza they were just metal bars with nothing to wear out or go wrong? Or is it likely it's just the bushes that need doing?

Assuming I have to get the bars/bushes replaced, is it worth upgrading them or just getting OE ones? On my Impreza I had uprated anti-roll bars fitted and it made the car much flatter in cornering.

Any recommendations what anti-roll bars/bushes to get if I upgrade?

Ta.

:)

The ARB's usually have bushes at either end, over time these can dry out, and crack/shrink, which is what causes the squeaking.

Have you have quotes from independants?

My old car, a MK4 (2001) Gti 1.8t (100k miles) had to have this done about 6 months ago (not from a main dealer mind!) and also the suspension bushes. Cost me a few quid but it made all the diffeence, smoother ride, no squeeks - I'd say if you're squeeking lots then your time is due to have them changed.

Cheers guys. I get my servicing done at a main dealer (just for the logbook stamps really) but any repairs I get done at a local independant VW/Audi specialist who are fairly reasonable.

Do the uprated ARBs/droplinks make a big difference on a Golf Mk4 then? If they make a huge difference I might have to order some, if it's not so noticable I might just get the bushes done and nothing else.

they wont turn it into a good handling car but they will improve it plus you could fit slightly softer suspension and get the same amoutn of roll through corners but have a comfier ride.

unless your arbs have deformed it will just be either the 2 mounting bushes that moutn the arb to the subframe or the drop links which attach to the suspension to tension it against the arb.you could get the links and bushes for less than £50 from euto car parts but not sure on fitting.
eibach arb's are overpriced imho
