Just an update. I picked up the the car yesterday!

Its no sports car, but is very relaxing with pull right from 1000rpm which is nice around town. Not a fan of the surge or torque at 2000rpm - if this was dulled and distributed a little better it would be perfect. Im guessing the new CR 2.0tdi is much better in this respect.
Handling is boring, but comfortable and refined.

Big thumbs up to the dealer who changed the cambelt (due to being over 4years old), completely refurbished the alloy wheels, put in half a tank of diesel, and gave me a 6 month warranty.

For the money it is fantastic. Cannot think of anything better for the age and mileage, with the level of service I got from the dealer I bought it from.

Find a 2.0TFSI. There are hardly any around and those that do exist are not wanted.

Depends on what the car is really. A 1.9 diesel could be anything from an 80bhp normally aspirated pile of **** to a 150bhp thing and a 2.0 petrol could be anything from a 115bhp 8v heap of junk to a 300bhp TFSI!

A little optimistic I feel

If they had a 300bhp version, I'd be all over it.

200bhp ones are the Golf GTI engine I believe. Plenty of poke if you want it.

Think the estates look a lot better. They are only available in the US though

The saloons are a bit awkward. They need lowering a tad and maybe an extra inch on the wheels
