Hi all,

I am helping my friend alter how his lights work in his T4 camper.

At the moment he has 2 aftermarket 12v lights in the rear. These are wired in to the live and permanent earth and have their own switch on each light fitting.

What he would prefer is for the rear lights to come on when a door is opened and then also have some form of manual over ride so that the lights can be switched on with doors closed but also switched off when the doors are open)

The way I was going to do it was to change the lights so they are wired off of the switched earth that links in to the door ajar switches. The switches on individual lights could be used to switch them off if the doors are to be left open.

To add a master switch I was going to tap into the door ajar wiring and wire up a dash mounted switch to fool the van into thinking a door has been opened.

Can you foresee any issue with this?

At the moment I am a bit lost as have 2 multiplugs in the rear centre light. One 3 pin plug which is perm +ve, perm -ve and switched -ve. The second multiplug just has one cable and appears to be a perm -ve also. Is it some sort of link wire between rear lights so that if you manually switch one on they both come on?

Secondly, the van has some sort of aftermarket alarm system. The van doesn't have remote or central locking but this is something my friend wants me to install. I am hoping the alarm system can be somehow utilised to control the door locking?

First, I need to find out what alarm system it is so that I can then try and hunt down the wiring diagram. Please see below:

Any ideas? Or ideas where to go next? It looks like there is a label on whatever lies inside the casing but I'd rather not bust it open. It appears to be plastic welded shut.

Or, should this alarm be binned and a complete new system installed? Seems a bit of a waste if this one will do what is needed.

Hope there are a couple of T4 nuts on the board who can help.

TIA.

Email the pic to autowatch.co.uk, it might be an old one of theirs.
Otherwise crack it open or post a better picture of the code, it looks like one letter is covered up.

Someone in the business might recognise the case, try a related forum.

Use the door switch to active a relay, hang the lights off that, you don't always know the fusing for the door switch and a relay will let you power whatever you want.

Hi guys, thought i'd report back. Opened up that casing and worked out the alarm model. Autowatch 161 RL/T for anybody interested. Bought the manuals online and it has some nice functions but the wiring loom to control central locking is missing. Will have to try and make something up or source it if my friend wants to go ahead with the locking.

Another question:

I replaced the switches on his interior lights from an on/off rocker to on-off-on. The lights can now be switched on, off or on with doors open.
The aftermarket interior lights are 9W each and there are 2 of them.

I wanted to work out how long these can be ran off of the main battery and still have enough power for a cold start or two.

My friend is going to get back to me with the AH figure off of his battery.
What sort of power would cold starting a 2.5TD 5-pot require (above freezing)?
What else do I need to consider in my calcs?

Oh, also, the alarm has a wire that switches to negative for 60 seconds upon deactivation. Was thinking it'd be nice to wire this to a relay to then close the door-ajar circuit thus causing interior lights to come on. I've not done something like this before though, what sort of relay would I require?
