I've read some horror stories about VW's DSG 7 gearbox. Drivers have reported total power loss experiences on motorways. Have VW really solved the problem by using mineral oil? Has anyone heard of mineral oil-filled units failing? Is it safe to buy a brand new vehicle with this gearbox?

The mechatronics unit fails rather than the actual box.

Is that the problem which the switch to mineral oil was supposed to address?

My folks S5 has a 7 speed DSG box so assuming it's the same one, it's been given hell over the last 2 years and has been fine.

Don't think it's the same one...the 7 speed box fitted to the Golf isn't strong enough to handle the power of an S5 engine.

It's great, buy the car! And as a brand new vehicle you will have the warranty anyway (not that you'll need it).

Still a bit hesitant because I intend to keep the car for 3 years after the warranty expires. Trying to choose between the Golf and a Mazda 3 with the 120PS engine.

There has been a recall to change the oil which is to stop bits of metal going and killing the mechatronics unit. So make sure that's been done, if buying used.

I'd be buying brand new so it would come with mineral oil. Have there been any reports of mineral oil-filled boxes failing?
