VX2268WM can't run 120hz

Hi, I got the viewsonic VX2268WM today, but I can't seem to run the monitor at 120 hz properly :/. I'm using the dual-dvi link cable.

It works fine on 1680x150 @ 60 hz

But when I put it to 1680x1050 @ 120 hz then this happens:

So the monitor output becomes really "unclear" on 100/110/120 hz.

I tried the monitor on another pc also. It's got a 7900 GTX, but the exact same happened there (worked fine on 60 hz but not on 100/110/120).

I installed the drivers from the viewsonic site. However viewsonic gave me a faulty CD, it was bent :|. And when I went to download the drivers from their site; the site was down... I eventually got the drivers

Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated.

I wonder if you need an 8800 upwards for this..seems unlikely to be fair.

I was going to suggest using the dvi but you already are :(

Probably RMA time :(

there's been trouble on the 5-series with flickering because of the 2D clocks being so low.
The problem I have also occurs on a 7900GTX which is Nvidia...

It could potentially be the cable, seeing as switching to 120Hz adds a ton more data to be transferred over it. Do you have another dual link cable to test with though? Not really something you'd want to buy another of, only to find it was the monitor all along.

sounds like faulty monitor, 7900gtx should be fine, you don't need a 8800+ or anything i know someone who runs one fine on a 6800gt

I used to get this issue when i was playing cs:source, but it was random. What used to happen was desktop was fine, id load csSource and it would go similar to that, I would switch the monitor off and back on again or press the 2nd button on the panel , the one to swith between dvi/dsub and it was fine. also I had my windows 7 aero set to disable when cs:source booted which i thought was causing the issue, but wasnt sure. I had a 4870x2 when i had this issue, I've since upgraded to 5870 and havent saw the problem since. To be honest, I dont know exactly what I did to over come the issue, but for me it was 1 of 3 things, 1-gfx card upgrade 2-win7's aero -3 drivers

Try disabling your windows aero?
Try simply turning the monitor on and off or hitting the dsub button ( worked for me, although it was only randomly i'd have the same problem)

I also had to make custom drivers to get 120hz or lower resolution ie for source etc, but i dont think the drivers is the issue as all I done to mine was effectively add lower resolution to run 120hz as for some reason the drivers on the site/disc dont allow this.

The 7600 has one dual-link and one single link DVI outputs.

Are you sure that you have got the cable plugged into the correct output?

EDIT: Just noticed that you've tried it with a 7900 not 7600 (which has dual Dual-Link DVI outputs). I suppose you have tried the obvious and plugged it into the other port?

Just need above an 8800 for Nvidia's 3D offerings.

@OP, what operating system are you running?

Me again! I had a look through the User Guide and it seems that it is not really as Plug-and-Play as it should be:

I am especially confused about the last line on the right?! Surely they mean 120Hz?

You'll notice that there are a few specific instructions when setting up the monitor. One of these instructions involves actually having a non-broken installation CD!

If any of this doesn't help then the only other things to double check would be, as others have said, that you have got the correct driver version (32/64bit etc.) from here and that the cables are securely attached to both ends.

Otherwise, RMA.

One more thing! I'm just spit-balling/thinking out-loud here but...

I notice you have crossfire 4850s? Do you know what bandwidth the PCI-e lanes are set to in your BIOS? 8 x 8? 16 x 16? If they are set to 16 x 16 then don't worry about this entire post. If they are set to anything less then it might be worth seeing if you can increase it to 16 x 16 (I'm pretty sure your mobo is capable?). However, I'm not sure if it will solve your issue, but the more bandwidth the better!

Thanks for all your posts, I've tried the monitor on this PC with win7 / XP and with the drivers (64 bit win 7) and xp (32bit xp). The motherboard I have is P5E and is 16x16 in crossfire mode. I've tried without crossfire mode also. The other PC i tried has xp and a 7900 GTX. I installed the drivers and still had the same problem. I'm going to the store and ask if they can test it there with another dual-dvi link cable.

Okay, I went to the store where I bought it. They tried it with an Nvidia card and a ati 5-series card. Exactly the same problem occurred. Then we tried with another dvi dual-link cable, but still the monitor output was bad at 120 hz. Then I called viewsonic and they said they would bring me a new monitor.

So now I'm waiting for them to bring me a new monitor. They said it would be sometime next week, but I hope they could get it here before that :D.

Well, I think there are different policies in different countries. They were helpful and said that viewsonic will replace the monitor and bring a new one straight to my door. Haven't actually looked into what my rights are in this sort of situation.
