Hi There,

Can I please have an idea of what I would be expecting to pay for a decent record player to go with my Audiolab system & JMLab 816S floorstanders?

Also brands/ models are appreciated :)

Thanks

Well, not £10K!

As a guide, my speakers RRP'ed at about £1,000 when they were new (About £400 S/H now), and We all know the Audiolab gear (Reconditioned but old 8000S and 8000P) would have a combined value of around £500-600 now.

So I guess a couple of hundred tops, but hoping there are some bargains for around £100 (at least initially)...

Be aware that record decks more than almost any other component have their quality directly related to build quality, and thus price.
As such, stuff garbage on the front end of your system, and that's what you'll get out of the back end.
My suggestion is that you go to a good local dealer, and have a listen to decks at different price points to really get a feel for what you're getting for your dosh.
Some good kit is made by Project and Rega at the lower end. Start listening to some of those and take it from there. Just don't blame me if you come home with a Rega P9.

How much are you looking to spend? A Linn Sondek kitted out will be around 10k:eek:

S/H will be a fair bit cheaper, Linn have been making these decks since the 70's so a cheap one will turn up sooner or later. If you get one, make sure it has been serviced recently.

Any opinions on whether the Linn Basik is any good as a entry- level turntable?

Thanks!b

Suggest you look at http://www.vinylengine.com/ where the active group of forum members will answer any questions you have. I still use a Pink Triangle PT TOO with Helius Orion tonearm and Kiseki Blue Goldspot cartridge and it still makes for better listening enjoyment than my Micromedia Stage 1 CD Player!
