Hi, my friend has a W reg 1.1 Saxo. She was having problems with overheating, so i flushed the whole system, and added some fresh coolant. However the car is still overheating after about 5 mins of idle.

-The fan does not kick in at all
-the top rad pipe is boling hot and the lower rad pipe is fairly cold
-Hot air does not come out of the blower

There is no contamination in the water or oil and the engine runs and sounds fine.

Im thinking maybe there is air in the coolant system. Can anyone tell me where the bleed valves are located on this engine?

Will the fan switched need to be replaced if it isnt comming on?

Any help much appreciated, regards

james

Few things to check:

Does the fan work? Take it out and stick the neccesary votage through it and see what happens.

Air in the system?

Thermostat housing, the actually thermostat could be shut closed so no water is going round the rad. Does the rad get warm at all?

Don't use the car at all as you will probably major problems like HGF.

If the rad isn't getting hot then I reckon that the thermostat is busted.

If the rad is getting hot but the fan isn't working then the fan or control module is busted. Does the car have air con?

I wouldnt think its the stat they normally fail open although for the cost of one replace it anyway. Normally air bleeds are located in the highest hose or on the top of the rad. If you cant find it/them then would take the top rad hose off and pour water in there. See how much it takes it may well be air locked and not pumping water around not you have emptied it. It may well be the rad fan switch is broke as well though as it was doing this before you changed the coolant. Could also be the waterpump has broke and isnt pumping water around, if you take the hose off the rad turn the engine over quickly and see if water is pumped out(carefull were you let the water go though, use a bucket or jug).

Sounds like an airlock in the system or a buggered Thermostat. Moreso the thermostat. Does the car have a water temperautre gauge?

i find its the otherway round, when they fail, they stay shut and the engine over heats. thats what caused my HGF :|

and yes i think this car probably has a failed thermostat.

They can fail shut but normally they fail open and the car takes longer to heat up if it ever does properly in the winter. If the stat had failed he wouldnt be getting hot water along the top rad pipe as the water would just circulate in the engine and that pipe would be blocked from the hot water.

my top pipe got hot :)

What way does the water flow on a saxo? is it from radiator>thermostat>engineblock>lower radiator pipe> radiator

i.e anti-clockwise looking at the engine.

I dont understand why the top radiator pipe is boiling hot and lower pipe is cold. The rad isnt blocked as i pourd water into the top pipe and it all came out at the lower pipe exit of the rad.

i think it must be some water getting past the thermostat or the large amount of heat from the engine is passing through and heating the water in the pipe.
