Been looking at new laptops recently and the w230st (OCUK used to do the pirahna based on this I think) .... 13.3" screen with dedicated graphics etc so gaming on it is an option but still in a compact unit - I'm not at all keen on "monster laptops". Configured price looks to be around the £750-800 range.

Look at reviews one negative point I've seen is that it is noisy and can blow out very hot air .... anyone got any opinions/experience on this.

While initially looking at a new laptop for myself it also occurred to me that something like this could be good for my son who goes to University this year -- small portable laptop to take to lectures but with ability to play games.

Is this a sensible choice for him ... is the noise going to be an issue in lectures (or libraries!) or are there any other suggestions around this sort of price range.

My friend has a new laptop using that platform. Im impressed by it, the only time the fan ever comes on for him is when he boots up a game. During web browsing/watching a film/normal laptop stuff the fan is near silent, you can just feel a slight breeze if you put your hand next to the outlet.

When you boot up a game the fan kicks in but it's not what I'd call overpowering. You can still hear your game over the fan noise, as long as he games with the laptop on a desk he'll be fine.
