W2K Server DHCP problems driving me nuts

On my network we have an ADSL router that acts as DHCP server and gateway for the domain and a Server running Windows 2000 Server along with 3 laptops, an access point and a workstation, I run the DHCP server on the router so that if the server should be down for any reason the other PC's will still have internet access etc..

Well my problem is that the router assign's IP's ok while the server is running, but if the DHCP service on the server is stopped or server is off the router does not issue IP's, I've checked that is indeed the router that is issueing the IP's by changing the scope to a different IP range on the server dhcp server.

It's driving me mad today, as the broadband and telephones are dropping out frequently and BT are less than helpful saying that there is no fault on the line regardless of that fact that I got cut off the phone 3 times to them ! I don't think this is related to the DHCP problems but it was doing my sanity no good today !!!

Any suggestions would be appreciated as it's doing my head in, I'm tempted to goto fixed IP's but that will be hassle in the future.

I know thats why I tried to disable the W2K one so that there was only the one.. it's just that it won't play ball I want to run W2K server so we can have active directory etc running but it just won't have it without being DHCP server as well..

Keep looking, it is definately possible. I do my DHCP (and DNS) on a clustered pair of Linux boxes. Don't let MS tell you that DHCP, DNS and so on have to be done on an AD controller.

You car't use 2 DHCP Servers on the same network, otherwise you will get the conflicts you have discribed.

but I'm not tryin to run 2 dhcp servers I just don't want to rely on th Y2k server to be up 100% of the time, internet access needs to still be available if it's down

Looks like fixed IP's are the way to go then :( and leave the Y2K DHCP server running but not issueing IP's, at least the internet will continue to work when the servers off..
