And what people generally thought of them... if they would hold any water.. ect.

They prove you know what you're doing, and may be worthwhile for a junior position with little/no experience.

If you have more than that, I wouldn't bother.

i wouldn't bother. the stuff you learn is very insignificant compared to what you will learn and really shows nothing. if going for an interview i'm sure they'd rather see a live demo of your work rather then a piece of paper saying you learnt very basic stuff.
