Upgrading Processor on my 2nd PC, Motherboard GA-X58A-UD3R (Rev 1.0) (Memory Corsair Vengeance Black 24GB DDR3 1600MHz Triple Channel)
I have got a choice between a Xeon W3690 £110 and an i7-970 £160

the PC will be doing a little Gaming, Game server hosting, downloading\web activity, little video editing, some encoding

Im not worried about overclocking.
not sure how good the Xeon would be over the i7-970 any input for be much appreciated

Any reason you'd go for the W3690 over one of the X5690 Xeons? Cost should be a similar price, well cheaper than the 970 anyway. They will go plus 24GB's of memory also should that be a factor.

because the motherboard doesn't take an X5690 that's why i didn't put it as a choice :)
I just added the memory trying to cover all the questions before being asked :p and 24GB is the max that board will take anyway.
The W3690 is the fastest xeon it will take.

If that was aimed at me then I meant X5690 - in which case W3690 has a slightly higher VID range and lower TCase than the X5690

Can't see that W3690 or X5690 are particularly cost effective options - overclocking a X5650 or X5660 is probably the better option.

No it wasnt aimed at anyone lol Its just from reading online I genuinely think the W3690 comes out on top easily from the X5650\60. The X5690 is a little better but is going for a lot more.
The W3690 for just a little more than the X5650\60 seems to out perform them without overclocker. Id preffer a stable W3690 with better perfromance than problems with an overclocked X5650\60

Also has anyone got a X56x0 going on a GA-X58A-UD3R "REV 1.0"
