I'm continually being offered the update:

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2656351)

Download size: 9.0 MB

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Important

A security issue has been identified that could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to compromise your system and gain control over it. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this update, you may have to restart your system.

It downloads, installs fine and then a few minutes later says the update needs to be downloaded again. I've restarted my PC and even tried using a direct download via the MS website but I'm still being told it's required to download. It showsi in my installed updates list once but still keeps offering it to me again and again.

Does anyone know how I can fix it?

Had one of these a few months back. It was a known issue and Microsoft eventually fixed. In the mean time I just hid it to avoid the annoying prompts. When I unhid the hidden updates a month or two later it had disappeared.

Can you not blacklist the update in Update manager? right click it or something.. I may be confusing windows updates with WSUS but I thought you could..

I'm getting the same thing - it has installed eight times so far. I tried downloading the file as a standalone and installing that, but that had no more effect. I'll wait for the M$ fix now.

I had a similar problem with my old work XP laptop - one of the .net updates would simply not install. Was on the point of making a trip to Leeds (the office) to get the laptop reinstalled when they decided to replace it.

Suspect the inability to install that update points to something amiss in the OS. If it's the only thing that won't install and everything runs OK it's not a big issue IMHO, but in the case of my laptop not long after it failed to install a virus update, and then it got a root kit virus...

There's a KB fix. Another way is to stop Windows Update through the services.msc panel, then go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete all the folders in there (everything).

Restart WU service and then check the updates again. Should work this time.
