I'm getting increasingly bugged by a series of crashes I'm experiencing on W7.

When it crashes, there's an audible buzz and the image freezes with no response to anything other than a forced shutdown.

System:
i7 920 OC'd @ 3.82Ghz
ATi 5870
6Gb DDR3

Originally I had the problems with Frostbite games (BC2 and MoH), but recently it's moved over to just general use now. I can't see any specific triggers as yet, no particular in game moments for BC2 and the crashes seem to occur pretty randomly otherwise.

I've been having these crashes regardless of what version of CCC I'm running and I'm not quite sure what else it could be.

Have any of you had similar crashes? Failing that, are there any good freeware scanners that you guys would recommend?

Well tbh if anything I'd say the problems have gotten worse since dropping the clock from 4GHz :s

I'll try out prime95 tomorrow, don't quite fancy having all the fans going all night and heating up my room :D

definitely sounds like an unstable overclock, most likely the CPU either overheating or not enough voltage. On the other hand it could be your GPU, if the VRam is overclocked to high it can cause these lock ups.

The GPU isn't overclocked in any way.

Okay, I'll try dropping down the OC tomorrow after running prime95 for a bit to see if it helps. Would it make sense that the problem gradually built up over time?

Also, why would it be specifically in Frostbite games to start? I know the smoke is pretty CPU intensive, but it hasn't been at smoke heavy moments.

BFBC2 is a cpu heavy game, so its stressing the cpu and the cpu is at an unstable overclock.

Basically what you need to do is download prime 95, there is a setting in the options to stress all cores (very important to set). (I think its called 'enable round error checking' or something)

Also find out what the max cpu voltage is for your cpu.

Then run prime for 30mins.... I bet it crashes or produces an error.

If it does, you can do two things, up the core voltage by the smallest amount possible in the bios (as long as your not exceeding the max safe volts as specified by intel)

Retest 30 mins of prime....

If crash more volts

If no crash.. up overclock by smallest amount.

Keep testing untill you reach:

A) Maximum safest heat your cpu can run at (I would say try to be at least 5c below the max safe limit)

or

B) Maximum safe voltage

Once you get this far and your overclock can go 30 mins of prime 95, then its time to see if it is indeed stable over a prolonged period of time, becuase remeber you diont just game over 30 mins, your going to play for a few hours at a time, so it needs to be stable.

Run prime for at least 5+ hours..... if it doesnt crash, pat your self on the back and consider it stable.

If it crashes after a few hours in... keep volts the same, but decrease the overclock slightly.

Repeat untill your overclock can go 5+ hours with out crashing.

Laborious I know, but your end up with a stable overclock you can set and forget and game with.

Unfourtunalty overclcking is a bit more complex than just playing with core volts, but its a start.

You really need to create a thread in the overclocking section to get some indepth help with your cpu.

That looks very useful, thanks a lot :)

I'm swamped with work at the moment (maybe I should be leaving my rig in a non-gaming state for a bit? :D) but I'll sit myself down on Sunday morning and sort this all out once and for all!

Umm...

Tried it out. Still getting crashed running at the stock settings (2.66GHz @ 3V) and even at 2.66Ghz @ 3.625V....

It's not in a particularly hot system, temperatures all around 60 afaik...
