Hello again OCUK.

i thought I'd ask for your help with a bit of a problem I've been having with Windows 7 recently.

My setup consists of 2 audio output devices,

- [Device 1] Rear Motherboard output - Speakers, Default/Main output
- [Device 2] Front Motherboard (Case) Output - LCD TV Secondary output, used for films

These outputs are from the same on-board soundcard, i don't have separate soundcards!

On Vista (all builds) i was able to for example:

[all sounds outputting through device 1 by default]
(Winamp/windows sounds)
Step 1 - Change Default audio output device to TV (Device 2)
Step 2 - Load VLC, and start a movie (make sure its started)
Step 3 - Change Default audio output device back to Speakers (Device 1)

After which, VLC would still continue to run on my LCD TV (Device 2) and all windows sounds and other applications like winamp would stay on my Speakers (Device 1)

This is a handy trick for like watching a film on my LCD TV, so the films audio would just output over my LCD TV, and Games/Winamp would stay on my PC Speakers.

However, on windows 7. when you change the Default audio device, it sorta "pushes" all programs/sounds over to the other device immediately, so when you go to do Step 1 or 3 on Windows 7, ALL other sounds move over at once. this ruins my handy trick and stops me from separating my films from my games or music.

so my question is, is there any registry fix or program fix or anything so that i can separate my audio outputs like i could in Vista. the list of potential fixes ive already tried

Vista Audio Changer - Fails, Doesn't correct the problem.
System Tray Audio Device Switcher - Cannot even change the audio devices in W7.

i am sorry if this is hard to understand, the problem itself is pretty basic, if your having difficulty understanding it, its probably just my way of explaining it i guess.

Thanks for your help.

EDIT:

after abit (a lot) of searching ive found the name for this silly thing. Microsoft with changing the design of Windows 7, added a new API called Stream Routing (Intelligent Routing), this is the new API that allows sound devices to be switched instantly, which kills my handy trick.

if anyone has any help or ways of how to disable this I'd be grateful, Google's not really helping much tonight.

a lovely registry entry with a true/false key would be handy Microsoft!
