What's the best way to do this?

Windows 7 Home -> Windows 7 Pro -> Windows 10 Pro ?

Windows 7 Home -> Windows 8.1 Pro -> Windows 10 Pro ?

Windows 7 Home -> Windows 10 Home -> Windows 10 Pro ?

Windows 7 Home -> Windows 10 Pro

Bearing in mind this will require me to purchase a "Pro" version of windows, would it be best to purchase W10 Pro and then Clean Install?

Also, do only the "Retail" versions provide the "Upgrade" option, i.e. does OEM only allow a Clean Install?

Thanks

Depends on if you want the option of falling back to windows 7/8.1 if you don't get on with 10, dislike some of it's 'features' that are too intrusive or MS make it subscription.

Technically all you need is the win 7/8 pro code and the latest win 10 pro iso to do a full clean install. The latest downloadable win10 iso can use win7/8 codes during install.

Ok that's helpful, thanks. In that case i think I'll upgrade to W7 Pro first and maximise the fallback option.

I need Pro anyway to join a domain, so may as well then get 7PRO, take the W10 upgrade and Undo if don't want it?

I'd pick pro over home anyways but it does give a few extra 'features' for win 10 you might find useful. It has gpedit which enables you to configure the updates to 'notify and not download' (well at the moment lol) rather than auto updating, there's some other bits in there too but that gives those of us who can't have down time some control back over updates.
