W7 sound/volume problem

This is driving me insane, but the master volume control in windows 7 does very little. From 0 to 100 there is a slight difference, but even at 0, the sound through my headphones with the volume from an audio player is just too much, when there shouldn't even be anything coming through. The especially odd thing is that the volume control only seems to affect the left headphone, and not the right, which is always loud. I can't fathom what this could be, does anyone have a solution?

You have your phones in the wrong sockets perhaps.
