W8 - black screen with cursor....

Hi
I have been having fun with this all day and wanted to check if anyone else had managed to resolve it.
I 'upgraded' from W7 to W8 in October which has all been working fine. While I was out today my kids turned on my PC to play some games..... got home and all I get is a black screen with the mouse arrow on it - which I can move around the screen, but nothing else.
I have tried my old GFX card, but problem remains.
Been online with Microsoft Tech Support for hours, they let me download another copy of the W8 upgrade file to put on a USB drive, but were no help otherwise.
While I was waiting for the W8 file to download I updated the BIOS. After this I could get into the W8 repair section, tried the Auto repair - nothing - tried to boot in safe mode, but it won't work.
Then tried to boot from the W8 USB drive but all I get is a Hardware Monitor screen......
In the Bios I now can't see my SSD (also have two IDE drives, but the SSD has W8 on it) and can't seem to boot from USB.
Tearing my hair out now, any ideas?
Thanks

If you have any sort of overclock try undoing it, strange stuff like that can be overclock related.

It might be worth reverting your BIOS back to what it was before for your HDD/USB issues.

This is almost the same issue I had with my SSD that died this week. I'm running W8 and the drive started to remove itself from the bios and I also got a black screen with insert boot drive messages, W8 also tried to repaire itself on the odd ovation it managed to load it.

What make and size is your SSD ?

The SSD is a 120GB Mushkin Chronos, which is two weeks over a year old..... that would be annoying.

mmj_uk - I undid all my overclocks early on, but it didn't seem to help. Since I updated the BIOS is has got a lot further, I couldn't get into any of the W8 repair sections beforehand.

Unfortunately I don't have any Windows discs, so have ordered a copy of W7 to see if I can boot from that.

Any other ideas welcomed.
