wacky cooling idea

so thinking about cooling down further than ambient,

first idea was a table top freezer with a perspex front and have it filled up with antifreeze, then have a few 360 rads emersed or a coil of copper wire, with the water cooling liquid running though that

but of course i then read what i already thought.
it'll just eventually equalize temps and kill the freezer
not sure how quick but guessing it wont work?

so what about something thats designed to cool water quickly

maybe a water cooler, and use the loop that cools the water in some sort of water tight box. and run the coil of copper or the rads directly in there as mentioned above?

thoughts?

hahaha i bet people have done that
got a hose from the outside tap wrapped it up tight and fed it into the loop on your system then back out side to the drain :D
you would only need a res as the pump would not be needed :D and use kill coils in your res lol

surely that wouldnt work though techniclly you would have a waterbill sky high and i dont think even 2 kill coils would stop the corrosion build up in your system :D

Please dont use water from the tap, thats processed clean drinking water!!
Invest in a water chiller and do it that way..
Or get a large reservoir (water butt), fill with big chunks of ice and cover.. This large volume of water will take a large time to change temperature..
Or dig a deep hole and bury a cooling coil, ideally below the water table.. Very stable temperature..
Or invest in air conditioning for your computer room.. Not expensive for a small single room proper system.

;)

So what type would work? One out one of those water cooling towers. Like the ones that have the big bottle on top?

If i did get a freezer i read you can mod them but didnt read how.

I do have a ac machine but just picture my self havin to wear a coat to play the pc. And id guess that would eat a lot of power to get temps down.

So whats the easiest way to get a complete system. Even if i have to grab it out a freezer or such like

These conversations come up from time to time. I think the limiting factor always comes down to the transfer of heat from the source.

That is, you could have a radiator the size of the roof of your house to cool your water, but that water can only absorb so much heat from your CPU as it passes over the block.

Rather than investing in a crazy cooling system, you might want to look in to delidding your CPU?

yer i dont think i need to delid. and in all fairness, i think a decent cpu block cold flow enough with -12 liquid. i mean even if i end up with +0 figures. if its miles away for air cooled temps i gues that would be good.

either that or just stick with normal water cooling and use two 360 rads to have temps as low as possible.

the ac would be on if the room or weather is hot, so room temps would be pretty good year round

by far the easiest way to get sub ambient temperatures water cooling.. would be to use an aquarium chiller.. however you have condensation to contend with and depending on the relative humidity then depends on how much you can drop below ambient before that's an issue.

If you can get easy access to a large body of water (water butt for instance) then as suggested you can lower the water temperature using ice and use that to cool your loop..

You could also look at using a TEC / Peliter set-up to chill the water but again you run the same condensation issues..

Unless you are going sub-zero then your not going to see a massive return on your sub-ambient cooling mhz wise..

Best waiting until winter and dropping the rads out the window for sub-zero runs!

haha i did think about that, and running the rads outside in the winter,

so ive seen a video were some one took apart a water cooler and it has like a loop, which cools a body of water, so when you draw off the water from that container its cold, and thats refiled by the big bottle of water on top. or direct from a water mains.

so if i took it apart as in the vid and submerge that loop in a water butt
and then cool from there?

either that or back to my original idea and use a suitable water holding device maybe even something like a small fish tank and do it that way.. and then use that as the reservoir. and maybe even have a rad in the water to maximize time spent in the cooled water

space isnt a restriction i have at least 5 foot wide and a got 4 foot deep space,

i dunno, just ideas but dont want to go crazy and then it flop..

condensation, i would prepare the board just like you would for subzero cooling so obviously lagged pipes

fyi water coolers can be had for £30

and am i right saying there system is more aimed towards drawing a constant heat source???

im so tempted to take apart my ac unit but i think my other half would kill me....

Rather than make your own, why not buy one designed specifically for CPU/GPU cooling.

Phase change coolers are really the only sensible long term below ambient solution. Plastidip or spray on electrical tape will save you from condensation shorts.
