Wait for Deneb or go for a Q6600?

Pretty much what the title says. I use my PC mainly for gaming although I do tend to do a lot of multi-tasking alongside.

After reading what the new AMD Deneb chips can do on air, I'm not entirely sure if it's worth waiting for them to come out or just to get a Q6600. I could wait for the i7's to become more mainstream and get something else cheap? Or just go down the dual-core awesomepwn E8500 (I think)?

Gimme your opinions OcUK!

Currently running a 939 X2 4200 (2.2GHz), 3.5GB of RAM (Some DDR stuff), X1900 512MB, Asus A8R-MVP.

I think you should wait, too many changes happening in the next few months.

With that said, Q6600 is a cracking chip, though apparently recent chips cant clock as far as the older ones could.

I agree with Trunks on that one, you got any sort of OC out of the X2?
I'd say maybe get a newer graphics card and hold out with what you've got. The decision may be much easier when the i7/Deneb are out. :)

Not looked into getting any OC outta my X2 as it's still on stock cooler (loads at 54/55), I've no idea what my RAM modules are like (Some budget ones from the crucial website) although I'm sure my mobo is up to it.

Would a graphics card update keep me going for a while? I was under the impression that my current CPU is about the right level for the card. For the upgrade I was thinking of, it would be a 4870 that I'd be getting.

Yes it would, I had a Opty 170 running at 2.8GHz and went from a x1900XTX to a 8800GT and the performance increase was most definitely noticeable so going to an even better card would see bigger gains. You'll be slightly more CPU limited as yours is clocked lower than mine was but that won't matter when you do finally upgrade the rest of your system.

i would leave it and make your decision in a bit

you would need a platform overhaul

cpu/ram/mobo / possibly gpu

start saving now
then look at what options we are presented with after the new lineups get put out

im happy with my current rig - it does what i need it to do

im sticking with it until next gen platforms become affordable to me

You say you do mainly gaming and multitasking, is a quad core CPU good for gaming?

Only curious as I was looking as quads and I do the same use my PC for the same things as you and I thought I heard somewhere dual core is better for gaming.

I'd also suggest waiting. New chips with in a few months if not less.

I fell hard when I went for me P5E3 Deluxe and E6850 and a week later the x48 Rampage was released, two weeks after that E8400 :'(

Is your computer struggling with anything particular at the moment? If it is, then you'll probably be well-served by any upgrade you go for right at this point in time.

I'm in a similar situation, but I'm going for a Phenom 9950 (and complete associated platform bangles and baubles). For gaming, it is slightly faster thana a Q6600 and - as a platform - it's slightly cheaper on average. Just my opinion, but hey.

If I were to wait for Deneb, I could also wait for Nehalem, and then subsequent revisions of both because they would have ironed the bugs out, etc., ad inifinitum.

On Intel a dual core is better for gaming most of the time.
On AND a quad core is better for gaming most of the time.
