Wait for iPhone 5?

Had an HTC Desire since launch in April last year. On an 18 month contract which ends in October.

Now, much as I like the Desire, it also annoys me far too much. It's great when it works but just has too many "niggles" and problems for my liking. I'm therefore pretty much resolved to switching to an iPhone as I just need something that works plus want access to the App Store as the Android Market just isn't any competition.

I basically have two choices. I can either wait until my contract is up in October and get an iPhone 5 on a new contract, or I can buy an iPhone 4 outright now, use it for the remainder of my contract and then switch to a cheap sim-only contract.

The overall costs aren't really relevant to me as each option works out much the same at the end of the day. The real choice is between waiting another 5/6 months and getting an iPhone 5 versus getting an iPhone 4 now.

Opinions?

(Please don't debate the iPhone choice and try to convince me to get something else as I'm not interested)

Is the iPhone 5 certain to be revealed there? Thought it had been pushed back to September?

TBH I'm just trying to gauge whether it's worth waiting for the next model or not. From the rumours I've seen, I don't think it's going to add anything that important to me and the current model will do me fine.

EDIT: When I say "5", I mean whatever the next model is called :)

If your current phone is annoying you, then I would switch now.

I debated over an iPhone for too long. What swung it for me in the end was that whilst they are expensive to buy outright, the residual values of the iPhone are good so the cost of ownership of the phone itself is not actually that high. iPhone specific contracts also still tend to be more expensive than those offered with standard smartphones too.

I'm not convinced the iPhone 5 will be all that much of an uprgrade over 4 anyway. Dual-core processor? So what - I've never thought my iPhone 4 was crying out for for CPU power.

It'll show Apples plan for iOS 5. If it's just a service based update, iCloud etc, with no real performance features then grab the current version.

+ Keep in mind there'll be bags of AAA games designed for the A5 over the next year... (if thats your bag)

Tend to agree. Whatever it's called I think it's a fairly safe bet that it'll be something like a "4S", i.e. akin to the 3GS upgrade from the 3G. In that case there really wasn't enough to temp existing 3G owners into upgrading and I think the same will apply here. I'm not seeing anything in the rumours that would make me think "damn, wish I'd waited".
