After a lot of frustration with my 4870x2, crossfire profiles, poor compatibility, etc, I'm considering ditching it for something better and more reliable to work optimally.

Should I be looking at a GTX 580, or should I wait for AMD's 7 series offering?

Thanks,

They will be out very late 2011 at the earliest, talking just before/after Christmas, more than likely Q1 2012.

Depends if you can be bothered waiting really.

I believe they have decided to push back the release till 2012, but im sure someone will be along shortly who will be able to confirm/deny/ridicule that statement. I did read something along those lines recently, although whther it was pure rumour I don't know

I also heard that there's a possibility of it coming out early next year. If the 7 series provides a performance increase over the 580 and is of a similar price then I'll wait for that. Three months is not exactly a long time to wait.

I love the speculation around the 7-series release dates.

Let's start a rumour that NVidia and AMD are going to release a Christmas Edition HD7890GTX SLI XXX Edition with flashing red and green fairy lights!

That would be so cool. :D

It looks like late Q4 or Q1 2012 for the 7 series.

If there is anything in Q4 it won't be top end, it's looking like mid-range will come first and the HD7900 series to follow next year.

So if you want the best, you'll be waiting a good 3-4 months at least.

+1, i heard the same thing too.

But yeah, id wait for the 7 series too.

40nm down to 28nm means a lot more shaders in the same amount of die space. Even if they put a stronger emphasis on power efficiency/savings I dont see how there couldn't be. (high end ofc)

I still reckon the 580 gtx will be able to max those games out at 1080p, maybe not at minimum frame rate of 60, but 30-60fps is more than playable, i guess we wont have to wait long to find out with bf3 beta out tomorrow!

Well its already been said to max out BF3 you will need GTX580 SLI.

I think the other 2 will still not play at 60+fps maxed with 8AA etc etc.

If you decide to sell the 4870x2, there is a person on the Members market Wanted section looking for one.

Just a heads up ;).

Also seriously I would wait till the 7000 series if you want an AMD card, The GTX 580's are fantastic cards and you can't really go wrong with one of them too and should be a nice bump in performance for you and no more headaches of profiles and Crossfire X problems.

I just noticed you saying this, is it an open beta? :O Can't wait if it is!
