hi all,happy new year.
I'm thinking of going c2d route soon, but read on the forums that prices are going to be dropped in a few months.
my question is, is it worth sticking with what I've got, or just upgrading say gfx and memory for now?
my present rig:
cpu: opty 170
gfx: 2x nvidia 6600gt sli
memory:1gb crucial ballistix 3200 ddr(4x 512mb)
m/board:asus a8n-sli deluxe
sound:audigy 2 platinum pro
case:antec p180
not o/clocked at the moment

Thought about just upping the memory and gfx for now,but memory prices seem a bit steep at the mo.
If I upgrade memory to 2gb but get faster than my present board supports(to put in a c2d setup later) will it run ok for now?
edit-forget that, c2d I would use ddr2 oops!!

I use pc for video editing, games, web and oh yea bit of work stuff(data)
thanks in advance for all replies.

The question you need to answer is does your PC do the job you ask of it at the moment? If it does then you could hang on to your money and wait till the prices drop. If it doesnt then on flipside, prices usually drop due to new tech coming out, so the dilemma is, if you wait you may want the latest tech in your rig and not be able to afford, or you could not have latest tech, save some money and still have a perfectly capable PC.

My present setup is pretty much ok, but It is some times a bit slugish on games.I'd like it to be a little faster encoding video too(seems to take forever putting my camcorder stuff onto dvd,but maybe I'm a little impatient :p )
I've got about £800-£1000 spare cash to spend at the mo

Would definately be worth waiting if you can live with the current performance. The price of c2duos should drop a bit in the next few months, and memory prices are about 50% more than 6 months ago atm, which is set to change.

Having said that, there are no guarantees as to how fast prices will drop (though as stated it should be a couple of months). Also that savings you will make will probably be no more than £100 or so (on memory and cpu) - if you can live with that then the only reason to wait would be gfx prices. If you are looking at top end gfx cards then waiting a couple of months should mean considerable savings, however mid to low range cards will show little change over the same period :)

wouldn't mind a 8800 but the prices are way ott.
would a single 7950 show much improvement over 2x6600 sli?
