According to Microsoft with regard to WOL in Windows 8 it differs from WOL in Windows 7 namely:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2776718
In Windows 8, the default shutdown behavior puts the system into hybrid shutdown (S4) and all devices are put into D3. Remote Wake-On-LAN from hybrid shutdown (S4) or classic shutdown (S5) is unsupported. Network adapters are explicitly not armed for Wake-On-LAN in both the classic shutdown (S5) and hybrid shutdown (S4) cases because users expect zero power consumption and battery drain in the shutdown state. This behavior removes the possibility of spurious wakes when explicit shutdown was requested. As a result, Wake-On-LAN is only supported from sleep (S3) or hibernate (S4) in Windows 8.

TLDR - WOL should only work from Sleep and Hibernate and shouldn't work from Shutdown or Hybrid Shutdown.

Having spent too long trying to get WOL to work as documented I can only get WOL to wake the computer from a full shutdown state - (hybrid shutdown disabled) - this isn't supposed to work as documented by MS.

WOL from either Hibernate or Sleep state doesn't work at all (but is supposed to )

I only want to wake from sleep or hibernate and not so bothered with wake from shutdown. grrrr

Anyone got this working correctly?

When i put my windows 8 to sleep i get a BSOD from nvidia drivers

It goes to sleep, i can wake it from my phone, then it either just kicks me to a full reboot and says windows stopped unexpectedly or i have to manually reset from a black screen

Exact same setup was fine with windows 7 for years, i think they borked it

Dont think my BIOS supports wake from shutdown, although my NL36 Microserver does but it doesnt have a sleep or hibernate support
