I am going to Wakefield next week (Sunday to Friday) for a course and was wondering if you guys know any interesting places for photography there?

Mainly night photography since I suppose this time of the year its dark by 4pm or earlier up there, and I am stuck in front of a PC from 9ish to 5ish.

I'm staying in the Chasley Hotel, no idea what its close to.

not sure if he will be any help but don Gilly lives in Wakefiled I do believe. Also Breaden, who posts on the photography section every now n again, lives in or around Wakefield.

You're lucky you aren't staying friday and saturday. The Chasley rents rooms by the hour ;)

Its right in the middle of Wakefield if its the one I'm thinking of.

You can go to Bretton Park for the sculptures and rolling hills. In fact, there's rolling hills anywhere you care to look.

Pugneys is a nice lake just up towards Sandal, which also has some very ruined remains of a castle.

There's the canal and river to the south of the City Centre, there's the Orangery near the train station (with its rather gruesome past), and there's the cathedral in the middle of the city.

They'd be the best things off the top of my head. I'm sure I'll think of more.

What course are you doing? Is it in the hotel?

Hey thanks for the list of places, I'll make a note so I remember. The hotel is paid for by work so no problem there if its expensive :)

The course is a Cisco routing one (PIX firewalls). Fun

On Friday I have to catch a train to Manchester, spend whats left of the night in a hotel there and then fly back to Gibraltar in the morning. I hate the schedule being so tight, a free day would have been great for photography.

Newmillerdam is one of my favourite places, its very photogenic, whatever the weather. Thats out of Wakefield on the Barnsley road - if you go to Pugneys and Sandal Castle you may as well go there too :) In fact you could do all three on your way to the sculpture park (probably not possible on an evening!)

For night shots I'd recommend going to Sandal Castle as you have a really good view over the city. It being on a hill and all that :) Please post some photos when you are done, I'd like to remember what my home town looks like!

Anglers Lake and the Heronry Centre can make for some ace wildlife shots. Also there are some nice wooded areas round there too.

ok, here I am in Wakefield, and last night it hit me what Gilly meant by saying the hotel charges by the hour. I thought he meant it was expensive. But a randy couple in the room next door woke me up at 3, at 5 and at 7 last night  lol ...luckily I was sleepy enough to just turn around and carry on sleeping within a few minutes.

EDIT: Also no photography done yet. Managed to leave the batteries behind! I thought there was one in the camera and got the charger, but then the camera was empty. Doh! There is a jessops just beside the hotel if I can get back from the course b4 5:30pm

I have to pop in to a photography shop later and get a battery because I left behind all my Canon 300D/Canon 10D batteries. (BP-511 and BP-511A)

Now, I have enough of them and I just want this one to serve me right now. Is the 'Jessops HL-BP511 LITHIUM-ION Battery Canon Fit' which is half the price of the Canon BP-511A worth getting? (£23 vs £54) or is it really bad?
