ever woke up and had absolutely no idea what was happening ?
I fell asleep this afternoon, when I woke up I kinda knew I was at home but that was it. Not sure if I could've told you the year at that point let alone the day.
no drink or anything involved here btw
have googled it and apparently it's called sleep inertia.
have had/still get sleep paralysis quite a lot but never this. Glad I never went to speak to anyone until it wore off as I would've prob seemed dimented!

anyone else get this sleep inertia thing regularly ?

Have woken up facing a plain wall once.
Opened my eyes and thought I'd gone blind as I could only see grey :D
Was freaking out until I turned my head and the window came into view. :o

Very common, I had it a few times. I find it happens when I try and nap in the afternoon....when my alarm goes off i'm disorientated for about 20 seconds.I'm not sure if the noise is my alarm, or the phone rining and i'm not sure if it's the morning or what - I'm just....disorientated.

I get it all the time. Luckily in my job I can get by with limited conversation in the morning and usually work alone for a few hours by which time I'm not a zombie.
The only time I don't is typically if I get around 5-6 hours sleep, then I wake up refreshed and alert. Any more or less than that and I experience the full effects of sleep inertia. Extreme muscle fatigue, disorientation, heightened anxiety, difficulty holding conversations etc. Takes a few hours to fully shake it off.

I've been trying to work out whether it's due to my erratic sleep pattern exacerbating the effects or whether it's simply a matter of getting 'too much' sleep which is bringing it on.

I haven't yet tried building a 6-hr sleeping pattern, mind you.

Could you not see your nose/surround of your eye?

what I hate is realistic dreams that are set in the exact room you are sleeping in, for example last night whilst trying to sleep my bedroom door kept making a "creak" every time a bit of wind came through my window vents.
For some reason the part of my concious that creates the dreams decided to make me dream a ghost flung the door wide open and came into the room.
I woke up in complete darkness wondering WTF just happened and then realised it was a dream a few moments later.

Does the same thing ever happen to anyone else? over the years its happened to me numerous times.

I've had this before, and as you said, it only seems to happen if I have a nap during the day. It's odd, just pure disorientation for 10 seconds or so.

I've woken up facing a wall, I didn't think I was blind, but I was completely disorientated. It happened after moving the position of my bed.

I woke up the other week, could barely move my arms and I thought it was Friday... it was Wednesday. Only last a few minutes, damn weird.

it takes me the journey from my bed to my bathroom to get my balance upon waking. that's if i've gone out on the lash the night before or not.

Not had that but I do suffer from vertigo as a result of going on theme park rides, which sucks, as I love them. But if I do go on rollercoasters then for the next 2 weeks I'll wake up randomly in the middle of the night with the room spinning. Horrible, horrible feeling.

Not had anything officially diagnosed because it's a bit pointless but the crystals in your ear can get dislodged with extreme movement and when you don't have your eyes and neck muscles to check your orientation (ie during sleep) then if your crystals aren't where they're supposed to be then your body thinks you're spinning. Crazy, interesting and very annoying!

That's called drugs.

yeah I've felt like I was getting pulled around my bed by some force and woke up sweating buckets before

the sleep paralysis thing has made me think there's been people at the door or in another room etc when the house has been empty but that's a bit different because you're not properly asleep, although I think you drift in and out of sleep so maybe the little bit of vision you get when you're awake goes in to the dream

Had it once woke up facing a wall and not quite knowing for a moment where I was and promptly smacked my head into the wall while still trying to orientate myself :| (that hurt).

I've done that several times. Ive also been right on the side of my bed and rolled over to get a better idea of where I am and ended up falling out onto the floor.

I find that (real) sounds can infiltrate my dreams, e.g. phone ringing.

As for the main topic, I occasionally have this situation where my eyes feel like they are glued shut and I can't open them? This is at a sort of 'crossroads' between dreaming and being awake.

I don't get disoriented but I do go through patches every now and then of false awakenings and they're always the same.

Wake up (in my dream)

Huge spider jumps in my face

**** myself, leap out of bed at 100mph
Switch on light

Stand panting in the light as it wakes me up properly with my heart beating out of my chest, still convinced there's a massive alien spider in my bed somewhere

Gingerly poke my duvet for about ten seconds before realising it was a dream, then feel really embarrassed and go back to bed

WAY worse if I'm not alone. I launched my ex out of bed and on to the floor once when it happened, my arm was under her and I rolled out of bed with her. I have no idea where I got the strength from but honestly she went flying. Kind of funny afterwards but she burst into tears at the time because she didn't know wtf was going on.

Judging from the spelling mistake in the title I would say you are still Disoriented.

As for helpful info, it could be a lack of water in your system. I had similar when I was younger, try drinking some water before going to sleep and see if that helps. Alternatively, if you are stressed/rundown this may be a cause, I've had sleep paralysis a couple of times when I've been stressed out to a high degree.

Sleep inertia????? Pfft... I think you are possessed by sleep demons, seek religious help now!

I've had it happen to me a small number of times but usually only for about 20-30 seconds nothing more than that. It is usually when I get woken up whilst having a dream.
