Anyone purchased a wall bed before?

I'm thinking of putting one in the spare room, but as a wall bed so we can fold it up when not in use for 360 days of the year.

If so, where did you get yours from? I'd have thought it wouldn't be terribly hard to make one but bet its the finish that costs more than anything.

I believe they're fitted to fit the space so are basically custom build did look it up once but not cheap. This place used to have one but had to remove it as it had become broken and potentially dangerous (fall down) and was unable to find anyone who was willing to try and fix it.

I've seen a few online but as you say they're a good £700.

Tempted to just look at hiding one in a cupboard but would like to have a proper mechanism in place rather than muscle it up every time.

Don't know the context / your other use for the spare room but is a bed settee another option ?

Can always double up as a casting couch :D;)

Get a sofa bed instead. You can get some decent ones these days and would look so much better than a huge cupboard or bed up against a wall.

I feel like a sofa bed would take up more room in all honesty?

If you know better ones though I'm all ears!

To be fair I'd stick with your original plan. Daybeds/ sofa beds are neither comfortable as a sofa nor a bed unless you spend big money.

Assuming you have checked the top links on Google, which all look pretty great but are quite pricey, I'd be tempted to DIY. I'd stick to an IKEA full foam mattress so that it doesn't collapse under its own weight, and then box it in using a collection of IKEA bits.

They do very large, nice looking panels designed for kitchens that come in nice finishes at a low cost.

That would assume the mattress sits on the floor though, so hopefully your guests don't mind the drug den vibe.

Edit: If it really is very occasional/ young people use, you can now get full size blow up beds...

Yeah we have a double deep blow up bed, but wouldn't want people sleeping on that for varying nights which will happen eventually.

I've found sum sub £700 which is affordable....I've contemplated making it as you say with some IKEA bits, but I really want a properly mechanism that lifts it nicer as I know the wife and certain people won't be able to hand ball it down and in to place.

I'd say £700 is reasonable based on 20 secs of Googling... Mattress quality doesn't seem to get much attention on the ones I've seen though.

Argos have something like this which could be framed in...

I'd worry that even at £700 it is still 'just as crap' as an air bed except now it takes up a lot more room and will be hard to throw in the bin.

Havent actualy bit the bullet yet but have been considering one for the office/spare room.

Aye, we have a mattress already which seems to fit most of the set ups

It's one of those things where going cheap means it's heavily compromised to the point you shouldn't have bothered I feel.

Go big or go home.

Personally I'd go for the middle ground and get a day bed if need be.

Not everyone has a never ending budget sadly :)

Reviews on the above seem okay, but its massive, so we've opted for a day bed that fits a bit better, gives us the extra room we wanted for airers and stuff as well.

Yeah it's why they never work for those on a budget. It's why they aren't common.

If you told me I could save a tonne of space and for a few hundred quid then we would all have them. But we don't because the ones that work well cost 3-5 times what I would spend on a frame.

My last bed frame cost around £600-£700 for example. I'd need to spend £2k for a decent wall bed probably more.
