So in the not too distant future I shall be wall mounting TV's for the first time. Ultimately there will be a 55" TV mounted in the front room and the existing 40" TV will be moving to a bedroom.
For obvious reasons I'd like my practice run to be with the mount for the 40" TV so it is in place and ready for use as soon as I've decided upon and taken delivery of my 55".

We live in a semi-detached. Both TV's are actually going to be mounted on the same wall, albeit one downstairs in the front room and one upstairs in a bedroom. The wall in question is the dividing wall between the two semi-detached houses.
Is this fact a alone a potential issue? I have always assumed that with fire regulations and the like, that wall should be as thick/strong as any other exterior wall?

All of the instructions I've read go on about finding "studs" and making sure you screw into these. I'm also assuming this is of upmost importance? Any reason why the wall mentioned above wouldn't have studs?
The TV's I mount will almost certainly be VESA standard, however the 40" is VESA 200x200 and I'm told the 55" will almost certainly be VESA 300x300.
What are the chances that studs will be this far apart? Or will just "half of the mount" be screwed into studs, the other not?

Cheers all for any input.

Get a stud detector. These will usually alert you to electrical wires and pipe work too. If it's the wall between the houses it'll probably be solid brick. If you bang on the wall does it sound hollow or solid? If it's solid and there are no pipes or wires between then you can measure up and get going - no need to find studs!

I'll admit that I just assumed the wall between the two houses would be solid brick. Guy next door is currently away on holiday so I'll give it a good thumping this evening and gauge if it is solid.
So worth getting a detector to make sure I don't hit water or electricity, but if a solid wall it should just be a matter of measure twice, drill once - up on the wall the TV goes?
It's a 1990's house - not that I think that'll make much difference to the construction material.

I'll go for a good thumping and a pilot hole I think.

check the mounting kit allows you to adjust the 'levelling', if you're drilling into brick/concrete block you're unlikey to get the holes mm perfect.

Thanks for tips so far.
I gave the wall a good thumping last night and it sounds solid enough - sounds like any of the other external walls.
As it is the party wall and I know the house next door is setup as a mirror image of ours, there should be no water pipes in the wall - just need to make sure I avoid electric.
So I'm going to put up the wall mount upstairs first for when I get my new TV and the existing 40" is moved. My thinking being I can do a test drill and make sure I'm getting brick or breeze block.

Can anyone recommend a good VESA 200 wall mount that would allow levelling once attached to the wall?
One that comes with all the fixtures and fittings would be my preferred and as I really don't want it falling down, I don't mind paying extra for quality.

Cheers.
