Wall socket - potentially stupid question

Hi all
I've just moved into a new house and these wall socket ports are in a few rooms, at first I thought they were ethernet ports but an ethernet cable does not fit. I've included pictures below but can anyone tell me what they are?

That's just a standard phone extension socket isn't it?

Thought so but they're all over the house, also is there anyway to use this as an ethernet port

No, you'd need to replace the cabling (and the faceplates etc).

Kids these days!

Before cordless phones it was useful to have phone sockets all over the place.

If you're getting DSL ideally you'd find the master socket and disconnect all the extensions as this can improve speeds, but if you're renting it's probably not worth it.
