Hope to get some opinions on this:
I want to upgrade to a 8800gtx but don't know whether I'll get a lot of benefit considering the rest of my system isn't the fastest/best and whether I should rather save the cash and go for a 8800GT. Only problem is I do have a 24" Dell monitor and could do with some 1900x1200 gaming, or something close to it
My system:
Antec P182
Corsair HX 620W PSU
AMD x2 3800+
ASRock Dual SATA MB
2gb Crucial Value Ram ( I was budget restricted when I upgraded ! )
Asus 1950Pro 256mb

I mostly play FPS and Pro Evo, don't need much for Pro Evo but best I've been able to play on FPS in widescreen is HL2/TF2 at 1440x960

I've read a lot of reviews on the 8800gtx, but couldn't actually find one that was running on a AMD x2 3800+ kinda setup like mine, so not sure if I'll come close to getting the fps that the dual core 2's were getting in the reviews
So, with this spec PC, is it worthwhile getting the 8800gtx ( probably just go for the OC 8800gtx ) or should I rather go for a 8800GT and try to upgrade mb/cpu/mem in a few months time?

I would go for an 8800gt 512mb (cheapest available) then save the cash (about £90) and look into getting a new m/board and one of the new Intel duals or quads.

Overclock that CPU and you could have some playing ground. My last X2 3800 @ 2.8Ghz coupled with a GTX was pretty darn decent. I really felt the burn when plugging back in my 2900Pro. Although I have a high resolution screen so my CPU power becomes less of a priority when I game.

Oh, just seen you have a 24" screen. Yeah get the GTX :) but please remember to overclock that CPU to 2.6Ghz and above if you can. If you're running the stock heatsink then I'd invest in an Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro.

IMO for that resolution you have to be talking the GTX be it with current cpu or an intel dual/quad core.
Agreed you need to overclock your current CPU - you should get 2.6 without much trouble

I wouldnt get the GTX at this stage.

I agree with jonislost that you should get the 8800gt. It will easily power your 24" screen and you should put the rest towards upgrading your mobo, ram and cpu in the future. An 8800GT can be picked for £165 on OCUK maybe even cheaper elsewhere.

The 8800GTX is a great card and I think its available for £240 at OCUK, but it aint £75 better than the 8800GT.

Thanks for the comments. I'm still inclinded to go with the gtx, as I'm really aiming for high res gaming, reviews tend to show the GT doing very well till you get to 1600 res. I'd actually like it if I could crank a few games (such as tf2 and COD4 ) all the way up to full res on my 24", something I'm not sure the GT will allow me to do. Towards end of the year I should have enough to splash out on new mb, cpu and mem. If I go for a GT it'll only be about 2 months earlier, so I reckon I'll stick with the GTX.
I forgot to say I've got the cpu clocked at 2.2ghz but I've always been a cautious overclocker. My mem is no good for overclocking ,so not sure how much more I can get out of this system. I run an arctic freezer 64 Pro cooler.

stock my 3800x2+2gb ram with a 512gts clocked at 775/2000/1000 suffered about 40 fps average, without any AA (compaired to 4aa) at 1680x1050 and sometimes the fps dropped lower. Going back to my AMD 6000 +4gb and I get 80fps all the time without the card clocked, plus general usage is much nicer.

My GT runs COD4 and TF2 with all candy on max at 1920x1200 fyi.

But you cant go wrong with the GTX its still the top dog out there. ;)

If you dont OC that cpu it will definitely be the bottleneck, but for high res gaming definitely go for the GTX. Squeeze as much as possible out of the 3800!!

I run my X2 3800+ @ 2.7Ghz, with only 1.5GB RAM, and a stock 8800GT.

Crysis withstanding, I don't have any issue with games, even UT3 maxed on my 22" TFT runs smooth as you like.

Got my 3800+ @ 2.8ghz. New 8800GT runs crysis in 1400x900 in ultra settings quite nicely.

If i were you id got for the GTX/GTS/GT but also get some second hand cheap overclockable memory and stick your cpu a lot higher. I use the arctic freezer too

Cheers for the comments guys. Had a look around overclocker site and reckon I'll go for a 8800GT now, with a q6600+mb+2gb ram upgrade in a few months time.

Seems like you've decided on an 8800GT, but I'd still recommend a GTX. I have an X2 3800+ as well and I recently bought a GTX, and the combo is working very nicely for me. I have a 24 Inch monitor so the extra memory and bandwidth come in handy at 1920x1200. I got my CPU to 2.6GHz easily, yours should probably do the same if you stick your memory on a divider. That way you'll only be overclocking the CPU rather than the RAM as well.

No offence, but unless you've heavily tweaked that game I just don't believe you! Hehe, it just seems to run like a slug on even the fastest setups. Damn Crytek I say, damn em!!!

Lol, well, having decided on a 8800GT I went to overclockers site to order it, I thought I'd just quickly browse through their sale section before deciding, and lo and behold, I got a BFG OC 8800GTX OEM for £211 inc VAT.
SOLD !
Now off to the overclockers section to see how I can overclock this cpu some more

Thanks for all the replies !

You mean "Low and got hold":)

Well, I’m in a similar situation. I have a 2.6 GHz CPU in a FX-55, and wondering how this compares to the AMD x2 3800+? (@2.6 that is) I've been looking to get a new system this year, and am still stuck on a X850XT ATI card. It plays some older games ok, but that about it.

I was wondering if (rather than wait 2 years for a Card that plays Crysis @ 70FPS@1920 res) I should get one of these, so I can play all my games Maxed out - that I never could on this card , like F.E.A.R., RAINBOW, HALO, DIRT, TEST DRIVE UNLIMITED, BF2 series COD series, and lots more.

These may be "older" games, but (I think) a 8800GTX will max out ANY game apart from Crysis on my 22" Samsung 226bw (1680x1050). I just hope Crysis is badly coded rather than very heavy on the card! (Which it is of course, more so than the CPU), as future game releases may be similar, in the fact that all games need Tri-SLI to get Double figures in fraps:eek:.

Also, if one gets a card like the 8800GTX, then one can get lots of quality gaming on their favorite games they love to play instead of "keep waiting" for a Crysis Killer card! - I think in this situation, its just best to take Crysis out of the equation!

Ha! Thanks for the heads up! I just spotted a Leadtek 8800GTX OEM going for £186.00 in the sale section. I couldn't let a bargain of that nature pass me by so I snapped it up in a second.

Gotta put my Evga 8800GT up for sale now...:)
