Right then, decided I'd like to splash out on an Intel Core2Quad rig that will be powering a Dell 3007WFP or hopefully a 30" incher with several inputs (including analog) if one ever comes along!

I'm really not sure on the mobo, I've no idea whats good and whats bad when it comes to Core2Quad. I want to overclock, so I'm looking for the best clocker :)

For the CPU the plan is a Xeon X3210 or X3220...any reason to get the 3220? Will its multy give it a large advantage when clocking?

Memory, looking at either the Ballistix or Geil 2GB kits. I've noticed the Geil kit is rediculously cheap at the moment, so will probably go for that. Is there any point getting quicker ram, or will these kits clock well enough to not bother getting more expensive ram?

For graphics I was thinking of getting a BFG 8800 GTS OC2. Will one of these be enough to push a 30" monitor at moderately high widescreen resolutions? (1280x800, 1680x1050)

I've always been an ATi fan, but having heard on here that R600 isn't going to wipe the floor with the G80, is it worth waiting on the build for the R600 to see how it all pans out?

Is there anything else coming very soon thats worth waiting for?

I'm probably missing major components, let me know! I'll be using my current case, psu, and drives, so I won't need to buy those currently.

Cheers guys (and gals?!)

The Dell 3007WFP is a 30" is it not? Or did you mean 2007WFP?

Not sure which is the best mobo for Quad core so can't help you there.

The higher the multi can go the less you have to rely on your motherboard being able to give you a very high FSB.

The GeIL is a very good clocker and the offer OcUK are doing on the 800Mhz stuff is insane

My X1900 can run my 20" Dell no problem at 1680x1050 even in Oblivion and FEAR. The 8800 should have no problem pushing that on a 30".

With the R600 being so close to release I would be hesitant to buy a graphics card right now. Even if the R600 doesn't wipe the floor with the G80 it may be cheaper and/or push down NVidia's prices. Either way it is win/win.

If you are going to be overclocking you will want to add a decent cooler. Just search the Overclocking and Cooling subforum for the best coolers going at the moment. [Please SEARCH first, there are like 200 threads all asking the same thing :p]

for the processor I would go with the Xeon X3210, you wotn see a lot of difference if your only cooling on air.

For the GFX card great choice with the 8800GTX OC2, would will have some fun with that. not worth getting a R600 the 8800 wipes it.

The Geil ram OC's like a beast so you will be fine with the 5300 ;)

As for the MoBo if your only having 1 card then go with the PB5 , people have been reporting good clocks with this MoBo, don't know what it's like with the Xeons though.

SiriusB: Yep I meant the 3007WFP, 30 Inches of lovelyness! Currently have a 2405 and would love the extra desktop real estate of a 30" monitor! Though the Samsung 305T does look nice...
Thats what I was thinking with the R600 launch, even if it doesnt outperform the G80, it might push nV to lower the prices a bit! :D
Don't worry I will scout the best air cooler ;) Currently have a Scyth Mine so will prob get something similar.
The P5B-Deluxe, is it any good with Xeon/C2D's? What about boards with nForce chipsets, they any good, or are the Intel chipsets still the fastest/most feature packed? Is the 965P chipset the one to go with then? Whats between it and the 975X?

PC-M: What multi does the X3210 run on. How much are they pushing at the moment compared to an X3220?
Is there any point at all in splashing further on an 8800GTX, is it 'that much' quicker to justify another £100 on top? Almost £400 seems a lot for a graphics card, so I'll probably stick with the BFG 8800GTS OC2 :) Really don't think the R600 will outperform?
Glad to hear the Geil OC's like a beast, always liked Geil, and at that price you just can't say no! I paid over £100 for my cheap at the time pair of 1GB A-Data sticks!

Cheers! ;)

My E6600 seems to like my P5B Deluxe and lots of people fell over themselves to recommend it to me, so I would have say it very good :) You just have to make sure you update the BIOS [REALLY easy with the built in utility in the BIOS] before you overclock.

The 965 chipset is the newest Intel chipset and is very good imo. The 975x is an older chipset with a few things bolted on to make it work with C2D. The NVidia chipset was a nightmare when it was first released but I think most problems have been sorted.

The GTS will be fine but if you want to make it more future prooft go with the GTX, The is some talk on the forums that the GTX is btter for gsmes like Crysis as it is a very ggraphics demanding game. But if your not planning on playing it save the £100 and go with the GTS. As for the R600, it requires a hell of a big PSU, the is a post in the Grpahics section that say that it will need a 750W PSU. The speeds are not quite as good as the 8800 but some features that it comes with are better. Im a Nivia fan so i'll always go for the 8800.

I have no idea what the 3210 is running on, there is quite a big post in the CPU section about it.

Will have to have a mooch round and see how the P5D gets on with C2Q's then! Didn't know the 965P was the latest, I only look when I think of upgrading :)

I think I'll wait a little bit to see if the 8800GTX drops in price at all, as almost £400 is too much to spend on a graphics card IMHO. I thought the R600 was going to be more power efficient than the G80, guess I'm wrong! 750watt PSU is mad, I only have a 530w Tagan :(

Will have a look round at what the X3210 likes running on...don't wanna splash the cash and find the stuff is all poor with eachother!

Any other bits and bobs I'm missing that I'll need? As I'm upgrading my current rig, I won't need a case or drives. May as well wait until after the bank hol to order now, so I've got at least a few times to piece an upgrade together!

Ok for a start the R600 wont need a 750watt PSU thats a load of rubbish. Im pretty sure the developers over at ATI have a bit more sense than that.

If you're getting the 3007 - then get a 8800GTX. Don't bother with GTS.

Have you seen the offer this week on OCUK for a new 2407? Would it be worth getting that - instead of spending the money on the 3007 (even though the 3007 has a nice big max resolution)? Then you've got 2 x 24inches :) I'm thinking of getting another one of thse if my desk has space.

And if you're spending money, would it be worth going for 4GB (2x2GB) ram?
