hi im looking for a new cpu cooler, i have a core 2 duo e6600 and i have the artic freezer 7 pro cooler mounted, i used artic 5 thermal paste as i heard it was meant to work well with the freezer pro but not seen a great deal in temp changes from the original stock heatsink, temp idles at 33c, i have 5 case fans on my artic 300, 2 120 sharkoons at the front and 1 on the side blowing air in and 1 120 fan on the back as well as a 140 on the top blowing out, so airflow is good but just want my cpu to be a bit cooler. my 8800 card idles at 51c to.

would be very greatfull for any suggestions you have

many thanks

Your idle temps are pretty average. What is your ambient room temperature?

An after market cooler isn't going to make much of an idle difference (in theory anyway) due to ambient temperatures. They tend to make their difference noticeable under load. What are your load temperatures?

You won't like this, however;

1. You have too many case fans. In a case that small, there is a real likelihood that you are causing disturbed airflow and actually increasing your in-case temperatures. One 120mm at the front blowing in, one 120mm at the back blowing out. Turn the others off. That should do it. You'll notice the quiet too.
2. To get better temperatures than you are getting with your AC Freezer Pro you're going to have to spend serious money (£50+) on a Thermalright TRUE most likely.
3. As has been stated before, idle temperatures mean nothing, it's all about the load temperatures. Run 2 threads of Prime 95 or Intel Burn and then you'll see a benefit over the stock cooler.
4. There's nothing wrong with the cooler you have, buy an E5200 and get a cooler running system and a quicker, quieter, one too. Sell the E6600 and the cost to change will probably be less than £20.

thanks for your replies i will take off my side case fan and see if it makes a differnce, my ambient room temp is very cool, my load temp is around 47c and gpu load temp is about 63c. i have been thinking of getting a new case the antec 1200 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-102-AN&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=

May look at a e5200 but is the e6600 not already quicker and will people really want to buy a used cpu?

finally looking at this gpu cooler http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-047-AK&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=787
just wanted to no if this would fit my 8800 gts and how easy are they to fit?

thanks so much for your input really greatfull

if it was me then i'd be quite happy with those temps. Remember CPU's can live safely at 70c+ and GPU's are designed to stand much higher temperatures. You won't be hurting anything at those temperatures.
