Is DayZ that good?
It doesn't look that good to me....
I haven't quite understood the appeal of dayz...yet.
I play arma 2 because I want a serious game of military coordinated teamplay action. Dayz is like...why are the arma 2 milsim nuts playing this mod which is about survival horror. I just don't understand the attraction for arma 2 fans.
I might "get it" eventually.
That's the thing, most "arma2 fans" don't particularly like it. They like ArmA2 because of the realism; as you say, it is a milsim. The majority of people playing DayZ are people that want an amazing zombie survival game, which is essentially what the mod is. The only link to Arma2 is that it's run on that engine, using the Arma files. It could be on any other engine when you think about it, but it was created by a BIS dev, on a BIS engine. It's just how it works out.
Those that prefer the realism side of Arma2, at least from what I've seen so far, tend not to like the more "fun" sides to Arma2 - like this.
I try to take games on their merit. Although DayZ has been produced using the ArmA engine and base files, I see it as a seperate game in its own right. It has taken some of the realism concepts from ArmA and applied them to a completely unrealistic situation.
I like it because it is unlike almost anything I've played before and going to loot a supermarket with a few of your mates doing everything to keep from upsetting any zombies is great fun.
I also like playing ArmA for it's own strong points.
Both games best played with friends.
