I have a Toshiba Equium L40-10U and it currently has 2 x 512mb of ram.

While running Vista it feels a bit slluggish so I have decided to upgrade it to 2 x 1024mb sticks, I have checked the laptop can take upto 2Gb of ram in total and it's running DDR-2 PC5300.

My question is do all laptops use the same ram ? Don't want to buy the wrong stuff.
 
Try running the Crucial memory upgrade tool (on thier webpage) and that will show you exactly what you need. If you take a look in the user manual it may say in there too.

The speeds will differ, but it seems like you're already sorted that out. As long as you get 2x1024MB DDR2-PC5300 (or faster), you should be fine. Make sure they're SO-DIMMs though - they're physically smaller than RAM for desktop PCs.
