Is there more chance of getting an e8400 that will do 3.6ghz then a Q6600 that will do 3.6ghz, and will the e8400 do 3.6ghz easier.

I don't want to buy an e8400 unless I can get 3.6ghz, otherwise I`ll chance my luck on another Q6600 and aim for 3.2ghz at least.

I have a Q6600 but it will only do 3ghz, anymore requires a ton more voltage and it gets way too hot.

e8400 generally go upto 4Ghz on air quite easily , Q6600 will go up to 3.6Ghz Max , most will do 3.2Ghz easily, depends what you are doing on you rig , if gaming i would go for the e8400 , if video conversion Q6600...

If your Q6600 os getting too hot , try getting a better aftermarket cooler and increasing airflow in your case.

My Q6600 is stable at 3.6Ghz on an Asus Rampage Formula, in an antec 900 case with with an Asus v 60 cooler. same chip on an Asus P5n32e-sli 680i board would not clock over 3Ghz...

I am caught between the two, on one hand its a much safer bet to get an e8400 that will run @ 3.6ghz on stock cooling with maybe only a minor voltage increase if any at all.

On the other hand if I got a q6600 that ran at 3.2ghz at a temp of 78C or below with stock cooling I would be equally satisfied. I don't expect to reach 4ghz with a e8400 as I don't have the RAM for starters and it would start needing decent cooling.

Reaching 3.4ghz with a Q6600 would also need decent cooling esp if its a high vid, and there is always the possibility that I recieve a "bad" chip that only does 3ghz again but maybe its my motherboard, I am getting an Asus board this time.

I think when its all said and done I`ll go with the e8400 which should get me 3.6ghz easily, its well within my RAM capability and I can do this without investing in heavy cooling, a q6600 @ 3.2ghz 78C max would also be nice but there is a risk that I will get one that won't even do that.

3.6ghz for an e8400 is like 3ghz for an q6600 most if not all can do it, and at a lowish temp even with stock cooling.

My E8400 does 3.6 on stock volts, showing 1.16v in windows, max of 55c in realtemp running orthos with stock fan. Needs 1.3v for 4Ghz and 1.45 for 4.45Ghz. My q6600 with 1.2 vid does 3.6 with 1.35 and 3.8 with 1.45v and runs a lot hotter.
