Hi,

So I'm planning on buying a new comp before going to uni, and don't wanna lose everything form my old one. Mainly CS5 that I recently bought.

The main problem is I can't find half my install disks so is it possible to just copy CS5 straight out the applications folder onto my new machine, delete it and put the cd key in again?

You could use a timemachine backup on an external drive and back up from that or use Carbon Copy Cloner/Super Duper to create a full clone on an external drive then use Migration Wizard on the new mac to transfer apps/settings.

Or if you have both Macs at hand you could just use Migration Wizard over WiFi without the above two methods but would recommend you create some kind of backup anyway.

As for CS5 you should deactivate it first then reenter your serial on the new Mac otherwise you might need to request a license transfer from Adobe: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/152/tn_15281.html

Do NOT use CCC if you have Adobe apps installed. This is dated but worth a read.

SuperDuper! works fine and is the method I'd use if you just need a quick, direct clone.

Follow the advice above before you try the method I'm about to recommend xD

I'd try contacting Adobe, see if they can help - first and foremost.

Otherwise you may be able to download a copy of the CS5 trial, and activate it with your product code.

Run Migration assistant. It'll copy your user profile, applications and much more. You might need to re-activate but that's it.

That's a moot point if you deactivate your license first as thats the whole point so you can use it elsewhere.

Finally saying that I have several CCC clones that I have restored from numerous times without deactivating and none have any license activation issues which correlates with the replies from Andreas in the post you linked to in that:

It may help you with your troubleshooting to realise that CCC alters nothing on any Source that you use for a cloning (other than writing to the CCC logs). It is all too easy to confuse coincidence with cause.

Are you moving between the same operating systems or going 10.6 to Lion etc...?

Also which Mac are you thinking on buying? I heavily advise against using Migration Assistant if you're buying one of the newer Macs that has only been released with Lion as this will likely cause issues with hardware etc... last time this happened with Leopard/Snow Leopard it caused problems with things like wireless and Bluetooth until you went back up to 10.6.

That being said I think its's only new Mac Minis and MBAs that had a new model released that shipped with Lion from day 1.
