OEM just means Original Equipment Manufacturer - its what PC makers get. Basically stuff with this label is exactly the same as retail product but doesn't come with the nice packaging and its cheaper.

Did you use a can opener to open those worms, or did you just rip the lid of with your bare hands?

I didn't realise asking someone's opinion about Windows Vista was opening a can of worms. Anyway, even if it was, I don't see the harm in asking someone relatively new to the forums there opinion on the operating system. I'm simply very interested in hearing other people's views on the subject.

Secondly, the reason why KatanaDV20 wants to get rid of Windows Vista maybe due to the fact that he or she is experiencing some problems which may be easily resolved. Or, maybe there is something about Windows Vista that KatanaDV20 doesn't like which turns out to be a very minor issue or not even an issue at all or there is a workaround thus saving him/her £70. :)

And it is quotes like this that cause all the confusion out there with regards Microsoft licensing.

The OEM license is nothing like the Retail license.
As always this license is good only for the motherboard on which it is first installed - you cannot move it from that machine to another in the future.
As soon as you replace your motherboard the license is then invalid and you will need to purchase a new one to remain license legal.

The "lack of nice packaging" and "cheaper" and two pretty minor differences between Retail and OEM.
The main diferences are in the license itself.

Its worth remembering that 32bit XP can only address upto 3.5GHz of ram INCLUDING graphics card memory.

OEMs can also only be purchased as part of hardware upgrade or new PC and are tied to that PC and can't be moved onto another.

It will work - but the OEM means that once you install it, it's tied to that motherboard. Using it on a different mobo will be breaking the license terms, unless your mobo dies and you get another one the same.

Admittedly paying £75 to downgrade your OS to an eight-year-old one seems a bit strange to me too...

Thanks for all your replies. Im glad I asked before I bought cuz you guys have bought up some important points that I had not considered for example the fact that its locked to one machine (license) and the 3.5Ghz RAM address limit. As a result of reading what you all have said Im gonna hold back for a bit and reconsider my options.

------------------------------------->>>>>>

I dont blame you all for wondering why I wanna downgrade because TBH I have got my Windows Vista running real smooth. Spent a lot of time tweaking it and its actually fast and stable now.

There is only one reason I want XP back - the lack of a Horizontal Span option in Vista due to its WDDM architecture.

You see - I bought two identical monitors for one reason - to use the Horizontal Span function so two screens became one big display. I did this because I like to play Microsoft FSX and other games across two screens, the immersion in that flight simulator magnifies a hundred times when spanned across two widescreen monitors. Its something I did regularly on my old computer.

Anyway - along came my nice new Core i7 computer with Vista installed and - Vista has no Horizontal Span.

You have no idea what it feels like to go back from what was essentially a huge 3360 X 1050 display down to a single screen at 1680 X 1050 :(

So thats it - XP can Horizontally Span and thats why I want it back :)

Will Windows 7 support Horizontal Span?!I will be surprised. Or is it too early to ask? Unless Im wrong W7 has Vista at its core which means H-Span is probably still not an option.

Thanks again for the replies its really helped!

What you need is:

Matrox Dual Head 2Go Digital Edition (DVI) External Multi-monitor upgrade for Notebooks/PC's

Keep in mind that not all games support this but Flight Sim X Deffo does, My mate has a Matrox Trippe Head 2Go Digitial Edition (DVI) (3 Montiors) running with 3x 22" Monitors, its a great bit of kit!

I'm afraid it does not look like OCUK Stock it but its going to be a bit more Exp than XP but a much better option!

The Dual Head seems to be about £160 & the Trippe Head £220...

Thanx again fellers.....well.....

You swayed me haha and I have decided to get the Matrox TH2G Digital after watching this video on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyyFKYrXt5k&feature=related

As gamesaregood has mentioned its expensive but then again its easy to do and I will not have to go back to an old OS.

Its just a bummer that I have to resort to hardware to do what I used to do within XP. But enough crying about that. Nothing I can do about it so lets just Matrox!!

Thanks for the help & advice :)
